Fable 4 Isn’t Dead…Yet

It's been two years since we last heard from Playground Games' Fable 4, and to say fans' enthusiasm for the game has crashed and burned would only be understatement.

Since the studio first announced the long overdue reboot to the universally acclaimed fantasy role-playing saga, Playground Games has kept details on it pretty close to heart. And other than a sneak preview trailer that launched sometime after its initial announcement, nothing has really come to pass, which has of course left many fans to ponder the thought that it might very well have been silently killed off.

Well, as it turns out, Fable 4 isn't dead. Or at least, it isn't dead yet, anyway. According to Xbox Game Studios' Matt Booty, the game is alive and kicking. But as far as an actual concrete release date goes — now that's another story, and one we probably won't hear until late-2023. And even then, that isn't to say we'll see the finalized product before 2024.

FABLE 4 Trailer 4k (2020)

“I'm excited for everybody to see it…”

“There's stuff I wish I could share and show, because some of the things I've seen are just so encouraging. There's a danger sometimes, that you don't want to [have] the RPG team go make a racing game or vice-versa,” Booty said. You don't want the shooter team to make a kid's building-block game. You can get in trouble there. But [Playground has] a great technology base, they've got a passion for the IP, and they've just got such a demonstrated commitment to craft and quality. […] During some of the first reviews, I shared a little skepticism that, look, I feel like we're kind of going out on a limb here, but they've since put that to rest. I'm excited for everybody to see it.”

It's no secret that Playground Games' primary objective is to deliver great racing games, which is where the team's heart and soul has been for the best part of twelve years now. Yet, when the studio knuckled in on the Fable franchise, it was fair to assume that the game would pop its head up sooner rather than later. This clearly wasn't the case, which has caused something of a stir from fans of the series since its 2020 reveal. Needless to say, though, we're still holding out with the hopes that it'll show up at some point in 2023. Maybe E3? Here's hoping, anyway.
