5 Reasons Why You Should Be Excited for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Not far off releasing, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is set to hit stores on March 25th. With that in mind, we took it upon ourselves to investigate what was going to set this latest spin-off from the Borderlands franchise aside from the rest. With each game being so similar to the one before it, it was hard to imagine how far they could diverge from the well-known format. But diverge they did. And in a great way, with magic, a tabletop fantasy setting and of course no shortage of loot. These are our top reasons to be excited for the upcoming release of this Borderlands twist.

5. Melee Combat

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands will be the first Borderlands-like title to feature equipable melee weapons. Zero fans will look forward to this, a whole new suite of weapons types and melee builds will be possible. While these weapons are reportedly not equipped in place of your main weapon, filling its own melee inventory slot, it nonetheless adds variety. We're all well acquainted with the over-the-top loot variation that comes with the guns from Borderlands; with melee weapons added to the pool there's a lot to discover.

Every time you use the melee button, you'll see your chosen weapon instead of a stock animation. By default, when you strike with melee, you also dash towards the enemy getting right into the engagement. From the gameplay footage, it looks very smooth. Also, not having to enter your inventory every time to switch your gun for a sword, should also add a lot of freedom mid-fight. It's looking like a solid addition to an already well-built combat system.

4. Magic

How could a tabletop-based fantasy game not have magic, right? Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is no exception, and it has done it in an interesting way. Taking the place of what would have been your grenade slot in a standard Borderlands title, you'll instead be able to equip certain types of magic. From the gameplay footage shown so far, you seem to be able to summon creatures or a damaging ability, drop meteors from the sky and more.

The fantasy theme seems to be opening a lot of doors creatively speaking. Firing off spells, while simultaneously lighting up the same enemy with your equipped guns sounds like a blast. Add onto that the different class abilities, there is plenty to experiment with.

3. Diverse Classes

The classes in this game, and their range of abilities, look very engaging. A somewhat fun twist on some well-known tabletop classes, in the usual Borderlands fashion, there is plenty of replayability here. The classes that will feature in Tina's Wonderland include the Stabbomancer, Sporewarden, Spellshot, Clawbringer, Graveborn and the Brr-zerker. Each of these will come with their own range of visuals, abilities, detailed customisable skill trees and lore.

Do you want to play a gun-toting arcane trickster rogue? A wizard that loves using guns, or maybe a frost damage berserker? The chaotic fun we all associate with Borderlands is all here and more, and each class is looking to be unique enough to warrant plenty of playthroughs.

2. Character Customization

Another breakaway from the Borderlands format that we have all come to know is that you will no longer have to choose between a number of preset characters. That's right—character customization! You will have the ability to choose your own race, gender, voice and appearance from the onset of the game. With this there are some changes to the story also; this is the tale of your character in Tiny Tina's fantasy realm, and not that of another protagonist.

A great addition, it will only help to drive home that feeling of being in your own, slightly-mad, fantasy adventure.

1. A Borderlands Fantasy World

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands – Official Gameplay Reveal Trailer

The world itself is one of the biggest reasons to be excited. A whole new type of Borderlands. Fans of the DLC Assault on Dragon Keep will know what's in store here. True chaos is born from the explosive nature of the narrator, Tiny Tina, in conjunction with a tabletop world, and the gunplay and graphics of Borderlands. It sounds like barrels of fun, a new take on tabletop and fantasy with all the existing mechanics of a successful franchise behind it.

As you progress, the world will shift and flow drastically based on the whims of the Dungeon Master Tina, adding some spectacular moments we can only speculate from based on the Assault on Dragon Keep DLC.
