Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Will Shut Down Next Year

Pokemon GO creator Niantic has officially made the call to banish the augmented reality game, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite on January 31st, 2022, with content expected to continue to roll out up until the last minute.

So what’s brought this sudden announcement on? Wasn’t the game only just released (and by just, I mean mid-2019) on mobiles? Well, you’re probably just as surprised as we are, especially with the player figures remaining relatively healthy and the game having quite the pipeline of quality content in the works. And yet, without warning, the devs have made the decision to call it quits with the wizarding world altogether come January.

“Not all games are meant to last forever,” Niantic wrote in a statement announcing Wizards Unite‘s closure. “Our goal…was to bring the magic of the wizarding world to life for millions of players as they stepped outside and explored their neighbourhoods. We accomplished that together, delivering a two-year narrative story arc that will soon complete.”

Despite the game being on the brink of collapse (or completion, if that somehow manages to soften the blow), Wizards Unite still has a few tricks and spells up its sleeve. Following the announcement to shut the game down, Niantic did go on to say that plans for a few in-game features will continue to go ahead. So, it’s not all doom and gloom.

What is left of Wizards Unite? What can you still utilize?

  • All Daily Assignments will have their rewards increased
  • All Potion Brew times will be reduced by 50% with Master Notes
  • The daily cap on sending and opening Gifts will be removed
  • Barrufio’s Brain Elixir potion will now award 3x player XP
  • 1920s Portkey Portmanteaus will appear on the map more frequently and associated Fragment rewards will be doubled
  • Spell Energy and Ingredients will appear on the map more frequently

Although Wizards Unite is set to close its doors in January, a lofty consolation prize continues to lurk around the corner. And by that, I mean the long-awaited open world Hogwarts Legacy will launch at some point in 2022. So you can basically keep your robes in check and your spell book bookmarked, thankfully. It isn’t over yet, students.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will shut its servers down on January 31st, 2022. You can follow the latest news for the game on the official social handle here.

Of course, you’ve still got time to pick up your copy of the game. You can grab it right now on Android and iOS.
