5 Best Valentine’s Day Games for Couples

Updated on

Valentine's Day has finally arrived, meaning couples all over the world are more than likely gravitating between two tokens of affection to gift their significant others: flowers, or chocolates. But, you know, that's just one portion of the human population. We, on the other hand, are pretty content with holing up with our loved ones, selecting a quality game to trudge through, and blindly picking out a box of premium truffles from a convenience store.

The fact is, we've covered quite a lot of multiplayer games over the years, meaning a few of them have become somewhat stale and a slight bore to promote when, chances are, you've already played them numerous times. So, we'll start a clean slate this Valentine's Day, and give you some clean-cut games that will have you and your other half working together through thick and thin, whether it's for a pot of gold or a shot at the WrestleMania title. Here's what you should take a look at this Valentine's.

5. Florence

Florence - Release Date Trailer - Nintendo Switch

While we'd all love to settle in for a week-long gaming binge with our other halves, life does, unfortunately, get in the way, and time isn't always on our side. Fortunately, games like Florence give us a generous slot in order to experience its whole world without asking a great deal in return. In essence, it's a 45-minute story between two flames, built with intricate puzzles and enchanting visuals.

Florence follows the story of, well — Florence, a 25-year-old with a keen interest in a local cellist named Krish. Through a relatively brief but bittersweet narrative, players are able to watch a spark unfold between the two friends, analyzing a series of puzzles to help usher in a new generation of romance. It's short, sweet, and a great nugget of joyous fun that helps shed light on all the rosy feelings that entwine with companionship.

4. Unravel Two

Unravel Two: Official Reveal Trailer | EA Play 2018

We can't help but cast a small strip of light on Unravel Two, a puzzle-adventure game that sees two unlikely heroes strewn with thread take on a flourescent world swimming with obstacles. With teamwork comes double the responsibility, and this one manages to concoct such a thing like a fine wine. So, if couch co-op is your thing, then you'll want to step into Unravel Two.

Connected by a piece of yarn, two “Yarnies” are put together to work through a series of well-crafted levels, accompanied only by a softening soundtrack that's too laid back for its own good. It's not your bog-standard action-heavy platformer, to be honest, but it's a calming experience with plenty going for it. Plus, it provides enough of a challenge to help test those communication skills between you and your partner. That can go one of two ways, sure, but with Unravel Two, it's a risk worth taking for the sheer beauty alone.

3. Moving Out

Moving Out - Launch Trailer | PS4

When we think of romance, we think of being abroad in some exotic location surrounded by nothing more than confetti rose petals and trickling champagne waters. What we don't think of, however, is boxing up valuables and misshaped furniture and hurling them into the back of a moving van. And so, on that note, it seems awfully strange to recommend such a thing on today of all days.

Anyway, we're still going to recommend Moving Out. If you enjoyed Overcooked when it came out a little ways back, then you'll be pleased to know that this one flows from an identical vein. The goal is simple: work against the clock by getting as many pieces of furniture into a moving van as possible. Sounds simple, right? Wrong. So very, very wrong. A new challenge awaits here, and it will take every bone in your body to solve it.

2. Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley - Trailer (Nintendo Switch)

I'm not entirely sure what your thoughts on building a digital farm with your counterpart are, but if that does sound like something you'd both be interested in, then by all means — enrol in Stardew Valley. It's elegant, simple, and a whole lot of fun to experience as a team. And hey, you can even divide the farming duties, should you wish to divvy up the responsibility of owning a pixelated farmyard.

Stardew Valley allows for its players to step into a multiplayer world where building and growth go hand-in-hand. By enlisting your other half, you too can start a new life aboard its charming region, where you can build a home, get married, and even have children. In a nutshell, it's a second life on a Switch, as well as all other major platforms. Because nothing says I love you like smothering horse manure over a field together, am I right?

1. It Takes Two

It Takes Two Official Reveal Trailer

When it comes to couch co-op games, we will always stand by It Takes Two. There's something so whimsical about it, that we just can't help but sing its praises for whenever a list of this nature pops up. Plus, with local co-op games becoming a dying breed, it gives us more the reason to push it into any face that dares to cross our borders.

It Takes Two follows a couple forced to go to desperate measures to help rekindle their dying flame. After turning into ragdolls and being given an ultimatum of either working together to return to the human world, or wallowing in silence as a motionless duo, their marriage is soon put to the test. Every level boasts something extraordinary, and it's up to the two of you to sift through each and every layer of its vigorous world. So, so much fun awaits with this one. If you're looking for an essential play today — then look no further.
