5 Best Games Like Skyrim

 on

When Skyrim was released, it was very apparent that it had blessed gamers with a masterpiece. For its time, it was revolutionary in how it brought environment, fantasy, and overall immersion into the game. It truly felt like you were stepping into another world, ready to resolve and unravel its many mysteries.

What Skyrim actually achieved was to show us what ARPGs are capable of, and why we keep returning to enjoy their fantastic role-playing genre. Not many games have been able to achieve the same praise as Skyrim, but they have come close. In their own environment and fantasy, they thrive off of all the great features that brought you to love Skyrim in the first place. That's why we are showcasing these titles, by bringing you the five best games like Skyrim.

5. Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 might not be set in the medieval time period, but the game's roots match that of Skyrim. Both are action role-playing games (ARPG), which are set in an open world, and hold a tremendous amount of possibilities. There's even the equal inclusion of awkward NPC dialogue. It's not quite “arrow in the knee “comedy gold, but it shares the same humor.

Cyberpunk adds on all of the wonderful qualities that made Skyrim such a gorgeous game. The character customization for one is one of the most extensive of any RPG. I'm not just talking about the base model either. Once you are in the thick of it, designing your character's fighting abilities holds endless possibilities. The in-game quest and side quest are full of crucial decisions that reflect your role in the game. Just like Skyrim, there are different groups you can join, friends/enemies you can make, and beyond.

4. Kingdom Come: Deliverance

If you're here because you love open-world games set in the medieval era, then try out Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It delivers nothing short of a heroic open world with the same emphasis on questing. This is best accomplished by exploring the map as freely as possible, exactly as you would in Skyrim. However, once you do, the game's environment will begin to take on a Skyrim-like feel, as it is structured up similarly to Skryims' world but is much larger.

The only exception in Kingdom Come: Deliverance is that there is no inclusion of magic and spells, but that doesn't take away from the game. The in-game combat has a slight learning curve but it plays in a really fun manner. The combat doesn't feel just like a hack and slash and delivers a more authentic and original experience.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance may not hold all the mystery and mythology of Skyrim, but aside from that the games are similar depictions of one another.

3. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

In case you are looking for all of the great magic and mystery from Skyrim, there is an open-world ARPG adventure that brings just that. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a wonderfully crafted ARPG that will definitely scratch the Skyrim itch you've been longing for. Its open world is set on a massive scale and hold's no shortage of mystery, and solving puzzles, sadly.

A plethora of places to explore and things to do in Breath of the Wild makes it so the game never loses its immersion. Also paired with that is the combat. There's no issue if you want to fight the assortment of creatures scattered throughout the lands with swords, axes, and spears, but you can also get creative. There is a host of magical abilities that can be used in combination with your combat. This lets your imagination take the reigns and proves the combat never grows stale.

Overall if you're really looking to be immersed in a magical and mysterious world like Skyrim, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild should have you hooked.

2. Fallout 4

Often looked at as Skyrim's radioactive wasteland counterpart, Fallout 4 is a must for any gamer who thrives in RPG games. Set in an open world that has succumbed to the progressions of nuclear war, you are left to survive amongst the hordes of looters and bandits that now make up society. This forces you to explore the open world, and unveil new and often random side quests that can embark you on a completely new adventure.

Just like in Skyrim when you're left to choose between the Stormcloaks and Whiterun, Fallout 4 delivers this role-playing but in a different manner. Choices you make throughout the story play a role in your character's development, which makes for a much more intriguing adventure. This really pushes on the role-playing immersion that Fallout 4 delivers on just as much as Skyrim.

1. Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

If you want the most authentic open-world fantasy experience of Skyrim, then look no further than the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The game brings ARPG to a massively detailed and explorable world. Every town, castle, and environment you stumble upon in the Witcher 3 is unique and encompassing. You're intrigued to explore further and uncover what the world is hiding.

You can develop your character with different skills as you would your attributes in Skyrim. This also goe's for using magic and spells in battle. Which you will need to use as there are some grueling monsters you'll face off against as you progress through the game. If you're really looking to scratch that Skyrim itch, the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is undoubtedly your number one choice.

Honorable Mention

One of the best games like Skyrim that you can't forget is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It's the predecessor to Skyrim and holds all of the great content from Skyrim just in an earlier model. Don't knock it though for its age, it is a ton of ARPG fun.
