Avowed: Everything We Know (2024)

Several trailers later, Avowed is now closer than ever to arriving on your doorstep. Obsidian has been working tirelessly to bring the project to life, alongside the upcoming The Outer Worlds 2. The new game will merge spell-infused abilities, swordplay, and even guns. These will quite possibly open up limitless possibilities to lay waste to the skeleton and giant enemy bears roaming around the fantasy setting. To prepare for launch, check out everything we know about Avowed down below.

What is Avowed?

Avowed is an upcoming first-person fantasy action RPG. It plans to mix and match wizardly with skill-based combat. You’ll double-wield swords and guns, taking down enemies of varied types and skills. While you’re not busy fighting, you’ll be immersed in a fantasy RPG world. At the moment it’s unclear whether Avowed will be an open-world experience. What we do know is an epic adventure awaits that, if flawlessly executed, could easily become your next favorite pastime in the world of gaming.

Aedyran in Avowed

Avowed plans to take you to the fictional world of Eora, which you may have already taken out for a spin in the Pillars of Eternity. However, while Pillars of Eternity takes the isometric perspective, Avowed will take a first-person perspective approach. You’ll explore the fantasy island, Living Lands, packed with adventure and danger. As a member of the envoy of Aedyr, you’ll be sent out to Living Lands to investigate a spreading plague.

Upon arrival, you’ll soon discover the island is chock full of mysteries, secrets, danger and adventure. At the bustling port city of Paradis, you unravel the tension between the Aedyran people and the locals. Some of your missions will need you to make heavy decisions that push the boundaries between morality and gray areas. All of your decisions will have consequences, so choose wisely.

Furthermore, the Living Lands will unravel a deeper connection to your character. Alongside the discovery is an ancient secret that could potentially destroy the world. “Can you save this unknown frontier and your soul from the forces threatening to tear them asunder?” wraps up Avowed’s Steam description.

Avowed’s gameplay will feature three main gameplay elements. You’ll spend your time in the game exploring the strange and charming world around you. Living Lands will don both fantasy elements and intrinsic features that call out to your character for help. The island will have varied biomes and regions to explore. It’ll have varying environments and landscapes, each with a unique ecosystem.

But Avowed will also pose a danger to you. You’ll run into a wide range of enemies, from bosses with staggering health to smaller enemies who are quicker on their feet. To attack and defend yourself, you’ll tap into wide-ranging spells. Some spells freeze enemies in their place, giving you time to take on stronger enemies.

You can also burn enemies with fire-based spells. Alongside spells will be guns and swords to help fight off enemies. Swords will have a shield you can use to bash enemies’ heads in. But you’ll also have a bow and arrow, perfect for taking out enemies from afar.

Lastly, Avowed plans to craft companions to keep you company on your journey. They will hail from different species and fight alongside you. Each companion will have unique abilities, from a mercenary to a wizard and many more. The choices you make in Avowed will determine how companions behave, while also helping them complete their missions.

Developer Obsidian Entertainment and publisher Xbox Game Studios are currently working on Avowed. Obsidian is no stranger to gaming having developed multiple games, including Grounded, The Outer Worlds, Pillars of Enternity, Pentiment, and many more. They’ve been developing games for more than a decade while scooping up several nominations and awards over the years.

We first got wind of Avowed’s development in 2020. Since then, Obsidian has worked tirelessly on bringing the exciting, dual-wielding, magic-infused romp to life. The studio has also been working on The Outer Worlds 2 slated to launch sometime in 2025 or early 2026. So, they definitely have their hands full.

Still, we’ve been fortunate to get several glimpses into the gameplay you can expect, including at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 event. The developing team seems excited to bring the final game to fruition and we can’t wait for launch day to arrive.

Avowed - Official Gameplay Trailer

Obsidian Entertainment has been pretty diligent in pulling back the curtain on the story, visuals, and more gameplay elements you can expect in the final game. They’ve released a series of trailers over the years. You can check out the announcement trailer here, the story trailer here and the gameplay trailer here. The latter showcases some of the choices you’ll need to make.

You get a clearer picture of the visuals and combat you can expect. Some combat sequences look a little stiff. The visuals can also use more vibrant color. Still, the trailers do a fantastic job of setting the tone of what’s to come. What’s clear is that Elder Scrolls and Skyrim fans will feel at home in Avowed. But even more so, fans of fantasy RPG settings in general.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

Obsidian has confirmed that Avowed will be launching sometime in 2024. It’s unclear when exactly the upcoming game will launch, perhaps later in the year. Avowed will launch on Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms, not surprising given Obsidian is a first-party Xbox studio.

In any case, you can always add the game to your Steam wishlist to get a notification as soon as it drops. Alternatively, Xbox owners can get their hands on the game via Xbox Game Pass from Day One of release. Editions remain unconfirmed.

Feel free to follow the official social handle here to keep track of new updates. Meanwhile, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for new information and let you know as soon as it comes up.
