Witch of Oblivion: Everything We Know

The concept of fire as a superpower has always been intriguing. It can be utterly powerful against nearly everything. But if it gets out of control, the damage can be irreversible. Witch of Oblivion seeks to tinker around with the concept of fire as a powerful but cautious tool. It casts you in the role of a witch learning to use her fire-based magic abilities. But it also crafts an adventure that’ll keep you intrigued until you discover the true ending. Curious to know more? Read on to learn everything we know about Witch of Oblivion so far.

What is Witch of Oblivion?

Lyva running to the forest

Witch of Oblivion is an upcoming open-world, sorcerous soul-like game. It plans to infuse multiple genres, including roguelite mechanics, via an ever-changing enchanted forest. Further, you’ll have the chance to show off your prowess via the online multiplayer option.

Lyra fighting an Ancient

Taking the role of Lyva, the Witch of Oblivion, you’ll awaken from an eons-long sleep with no recollection of your past or purpose. You’ll comb through the terrifying depths of an enchanted forest, searching for fragments of your memories. In the forest’s belly, you’ll uncover monstrous entities called Ancients. You’ll also master the power of the Forbidden Flame, which allows you to burn enemies. But if you’re not careful, your newfound power will burn the forest and your friends too.

Witch of Oblivion will craft a captivating adventure. You’ll embark on a journey where you’ll need to make tough decisions that shape your destiny. Your decisions will also impact the world, so you have to choose wisely. Witch of Oblivion’s Steam store page hints at some of the decisions you’ll make. “Will you defy the Ancients, and reclaim your memories, hold the world in stagnation, or succumb to the darkness of oblivion?” Get ready to restore balance to the world around you by making tough choices that will shape the world and lead to multiple endings.

Lyra in forest

Witch of Oblivion will take place in an enchanting open world. You’ll spend your time exploring a forest that is ever-changing. You’ll also have fire-based elemental abilities, which you’ll need to master. If you’re not careful, you can destroy the forest, scorching every living thing and turning plant life to dust. Your powers can cause “irreversible damage” when misused. However, when you master your newfound power, you’ll be able to decimate hordes of hostile enemies. You’ll begin to reshape the environment, transforming it into a prosperous place.

Here are the key features you can expect in the final game.

Key Features

  • Battle the Ancients using fire-based elemental soul-like abilities – You’ll master fire-based elemental magic to take down the terrifying monstrosities in the enchanted forest called the Ancients. With each victory, you’ll scoop up exciting rewards. While your attacks will only be fire-based, you’ll access different spells. But you can also switch to your melee-based stave for up-close-and-personal combat.
  • Explore an enchanted, ever-changing open world – With each new day, the enchanted forest of Witch of Oblivion will regenerate. Thus, exploration of the open world will always feel fresh and engaging. The forest will have dungeons, loot, and enemies, all of which will change in location and layout. As a result, Witch of Oblivion will play like a roguelite, always crafting something new with each run.
  • Customize a unique play styleWitch of Oblivion plans to use a “deep alchemical crafting system” to provide a variety of builds to choose from. You’ll gather craftable items  on your journey, which you’ll use to create new equipment and gear. Further, you can collect gems to access active and passive skills. With the variety of materials and gems scattered in the environment, you’ll be able to customize a unique build that suits your play style.
  • Hone fire-based magic – You’ll use fire to decimate enemies, but also to light your way. You’ll also use your powers to uncover hidden treasures. However, you need to be careful to avoid causing irreversible damage to the world around you.
  • Online co-op multiplayer mode – It seems Witch of Oblivion will also have an online multiplayer option. You’ll compete against other players who’ll play the roles of the Aberrant Ancients. During your playthrough, you’ll collect rare crafting items. But you’ll also keep track of kill times, with the best witches ranking the highest in an online leaderboard.

Tasto Alpha is currently working on developing and publishing Witch of Oblivion. You probably know the studio for their work in the card-based roguelike The Tower: To the Bottom, which was released to mostly positive reviews.

Witch of Oblivion - Official Reveal Trailer

Check out Witch of Oblivion’s official announcement trailer currently out on YouTube. It showcases the environments you can expect in the final game. You see the tyrannical Ancients unleashing their wrath on the world. You also see adorable creatures. The video juxtaposes a frightening world with a colorful, dreamlike adventure.

It shows the protagonist setting the forest ablaze and destroying the vibrancy of its inhabitants. But the witch is also the person the forest relies on to restore its former beauty. It’s a clever gameplay system that takes into account collateral damage and restoration. Here’s to hoping the final game hits the mark.
