Snack World: Reloaded — Everything We Know

It’s sometimes the least expected games that get a remake, and you wonder who exactly they are for. Take the upcoming Snack World: Reloaded, a dungeon-crawler action RPG you’ve likely never heard of before. But hey, it’s a Level 5 game, and the renowned Japan-based studio has developed some pretty beloved series. Their signature quirky charm and brilliant worldbuilding have been instrumental in creating masterpieces like Fantasy Life, Professor Layton, and Ni No Kuni

Now, they are remaking their Snack World series for current-gen PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC platforms via Steam. Although a concrete release date has yet to be confirmed, you can look forward to better graphics on current-gen consoles, refined gameplay, and a brand-new mode. Here’s a deeper breakdown of everything we know about the upcoming Snack World: Reloaded.

What is Snack World: Reloaded?

Snack World: Reloaded — Everything We Know

Snack World: Reloaded is an upcoming remake of the dungeon-crawling, action RPG Snack World. If the title sounds unfamiliar to you, it’s probably because it was initially exclusively released in Japan. At the time, it launched on the Nintendo 3DS back in 2017, and on the Nintendo Switch, still in Japan, in 2018. But after its success in Japan, its developing studio, Level 5, released it internationally, on the Nintendo Switch in 2020.

And yet, Snack World didn’t quite catch on in the West like other Level 5 franchises. One of the reasons is the balancing, which was oddly great in the online multiplayer but frustrating in single-player

Snack World, in itself, takes you to a fantasy world, where you walk around a main hub, exploring shops and talking to your neighbors. The game has an often humorous story, following the protagonist Chup on his adventures. The Sultan Vinegar attacks your home, which leads to a heroic quest against him. But you also have a love interest, who you complete quests for. You’ll leave the main hub to treasure hunt and dungeon crawl, with a maximum of three other players in local or online multiplayer.

And that’s where the balancing issues begin, where the solo adventures, especially after the base game, are so frustrating, given how much more time you invest trying to get your hands on valuable loot.

Story

Being a remake, I imagine the story will remain pretty much the same. You’ll still be living in the main hub and leaving your home to go on quests. Snack World: Reloaded is primarily a dungeon-crawler. And so, most of your time will be spent conquering dungeons that grow tougher. Chup remains the protagonist, though he will be joined by others on his quests.

The original plot begins with Chup finding himself in Tutti-Frutti, without any recollection of his past. He makes new friends, with whom he goes on adventures. The Nintendo Switch port allowed for character customization of the eyes, mouth, body, and hair, building your ideal avatar type. You then choose from various weapons, shields, healing tonics, and buffs, collectively called jaras, and set forth on your adventures.

Gameplay

Snack World: Reloaded — Everything We Know

The role-playing part of Snack World: Reloaded lets you control the protagonist’s movements and actions in battle. You may swap weapons on the fly, depending on the enemy you’re fighting.

An interesting feature that defines the series is “snacks.” These are photos you can take of the monsters you fight to recruit them as allies. And from then on, you’ll be able to summon them to fight for you.

Collectibles are also a key part of the gameplay, where you and your friends can run around collecting snacks and jaras, and incorporating them in your various builds.

As for dungeon-crawling, they often open doors for more valuable treasure chests. Looting is a huge part of playing Snack World: Reloaded, and the best way to rack up resources is to complete quests that grow more challenging. You may even find ultra-rare items just by completing quests.

Back at the hub, you’ll engage in fun activities like waking up Sloe White, helping the Spicy Galz, and other locals with various side quests.

Overall, the visuals will likely maintain the Nintendo Switch’s high fantasy environments and tech like smartphones in the world. It’ll likely break through the fourth wall, delivering a cozy, often comedic adventure to enjoy with friends.

Development

There isn’t much that the developer and publisher, Level 5, has revealed about the development process. It’s interesting that they’ve already released a remake of the original, when they ported the Japan version to the West as a full HD remaster. And now, they’re set on pushing further for current-gen consoles.

Snack World: Reloaded’s upcoming release on the PS5, Switch 2, and PC is effectively a second remake, one that promises “enhanced graphics,” “refined gameplay and controls,” and a “brand-new mode.”

Trailer

An official trailer for the upcoming Snack World: Reloaded remake is already out now on YouTube. And it sure as hell fulfils the “lifelike, beautifully crafted diorama,” that Level 5 promises. The cartoon animations look stunning and intricately detailed. They move smoothly, with ease and grace.

Even the in-game combat included in the trailer looks fantastic. The visual effects create a thrilling illusion of powerful hits landing on well-designed enemies and monsters.

Although something about the camera angle feels off. Enemies typically face you in turn-based RPGS, but it can be tough to see what’s happening during combat when your characters are blocking your view.

The official announcement for the upcoming Snack World: Reloaded didn’t come with any confirmation of a release date. It, however, did ascertain that the remake will be coming to PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC platforms via Steam.

Editions, along with information on the brand-new mode, as well as confirmation of the story and gameplay details for the upcoming remake, remain speculative.
