Earlier on, just as JRPGs began to enter the gaming market, one could only access the games via Nintendo. However, as the genre continued to expand and thrive, the need to extend these titles to all consoles became all too clear. Players can now access these games without being restricted to the type of console they own. Both Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S have firmly established their stance in all this by providing access to some of the best JRPGs in the market. 

There's something special about JRPGs that really captures the imagination. Maybe it's the promise of adventure in strange and exotic lands, or the sense of camaraderie between unlikely allies. Whatever the appeal, JRPGs have carved out a unique niche in the gaming world, and there are quite a few classics worth checking out. If you are new to the genre or looking for something different to try, here are five of the best JRPGs on Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5.  

 

5. Scarlet Nexus

Bandai Namco's Scarlet Nexus is set in a futuristic reality where humans have developed exponential sensory powers. Those who possess these superpowers are recruited into the Other Suppression Force [OSF], a fighting unit that defends the world from vicious mutant creatures known as the Others. Scarlet Nexus is among the best JRPGs recently produced; not to mention the most stylish. The game's design is incredible, especially the city hubs that look nothing short of stunning; the graphics are also extremely satisfying.

In the game, players are provided with a sword for short-range attacks; however, they can use their abilities to attack from afar. Using psychokinesis, they can hurl nearby portable objects at enemies. Players can choose to play as either of the two protagonists, Yuito or Kasane. Although both have their parts to play, their stories often collide at certain points in the game. The game features some pretty powerful interactions that allow the protagonists to develop throughout the story.

 

4. Tales of Arise

Tales of Arise is one of the greatest JRPGs to grace the Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5 consoles so far. It is also another project from Bandai Namco, so you know the level of awesomeness to expect. The game features mysterious realms where the oppressive rule over the weak. Only the brave and gifted who seek to bring peaceful co-existence between various feuding communities can achieve liberation. Here, players get to explore the open world, which features impressive graphic settings as well as solid battle mechanics. 

The story of Tales of Arise features an intense ever-developing narrative that takes players deeper into the plot as the game progresses. So far, the game is the fastest-selling title out of all the Tales entries.

 

3. Nier: Automata

When it first came out, Nier: Automata shook the gaming community with its unique but relatable elements. Like most JRPGs, the 2017 game features various Western RPG features amid its original style. Nier: Automata's main emphasis is on combat; thus, for players to successfully face tougher opponents, they need to gain enough skill throughout the game's progression. 

In this story, players take the role of YoRHa Androids, human-like robots at war with alien machines. Nier: Automata features various playthroughs and allows players to unlock deeper elements of the story as they advance. With each playthrough experience offering new insight into the game.

Similarly, there are plenty of fun ways to get around, such as summoning an animal to ride or flying aboard a mech ship in pursuit of enemies. Players face various moral dilemmas throughout their journey as the androids move from one difficult situation to another. The game also features multiple endings depending on the players' performance and choices. 

 

2. Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Like a Dragon is among the best JRPGs on Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5; it is also the biggest game to ever come out of the Yakuza series. The story takes a different turn from the previous expansions in the series, as a new protagonist is introduced. Players take the role of an ex-con who is seeking answers for the betrayals he has faced. You will love the game's main narrative as well as side stories that also include some humor. The side quests allow players to engage in fun activities like karaoke and also earn extra rewards. 

Gameplay involves turn-based combat systems that allow players to attack enemies with nearby objects. Similarly, they can call on the assistance of other parties to help defeat enemies; they can form a team of up to four people. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is an extensive production which allows players to continue exploring the Yokohama district even after the completion of the game. The graphics are fairly impressive as players take a stroll across Japan alongside other characters in an exciting adventure that unfolds as it progresses.

Starting from the soundtracks and cut-scenes to the various boss fights, developers made sure to cover all bases. Most JRPGs fans can appreciate the various interesting aspects of the game. Elden Ring features a large open map that players use to explore different locations that contain all types of enemies. Similarly, they can use fast-travel to hop across already the visited locations on the map. This comes in handy when the battles get too heated, and players need to retreat.

Combat involves magic attacks, blocking and dodging for defense against incoming blows. Since enemies from each location vary, players are compelled to use stealth and strategy in attacking. They are able to summon various hidden spirits within the map for assistance as each round gets tougher and tougher. Elden Ring is among the best JRPGs on Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5, which owners of either console can appreciate.
