Would you believe it if I told you that WWE has been at it for 40 years? This year, we celebrate Wrestlemania at 40. Since the debut installment of the WWE 2K series in 2000, we've had the pleasure of playing as our favorite wrestling superstars and smacking down on those who dare to oppose us. The WWE 2K series has updated its graphics, gameplay, and other features to bring it into the modern era.

WWE 2K23, in particular, saw a couple of enhancements over WWE 2K22, including an upgraded GM and Showcase mode. We also saw improved graphics, plot, and character roster. In any case, subsequent entries don’t consistently outperform earlier ones. So, shall we see if the upcoming WWE 2K24 delivers? Here's a comparison of WWE 2K23 vs WWE 2K24 to see which one is better.

What is WWE 2k23?

WWE 2k23 is a professional wrestling sports game released on March 14, 2023. The game was developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Games. It’s the 23rd installment in the series of games based on the WWE wrestling promotion. However, it’s the 10th installment in the WWE 2K annual series, succeeding 2022’s WWE 2K22

Over the years, WWE 2K's game modes have received tweaks here and there. In WWE 2k23, we played five game modes, including MyFACTION, MyGM, MyRISE, Showcase, and Universe. Each returning game mode featured updates. However, we did receive a debut match type called WarGames. It threw players into a tornado-style action-packed 3v3 and 4v4 tag team multiplayer mayhem within two adjoining rings surrounded by a double-steel cage!

What is WWE 2k24?

Legacy wrestlers in WWE 2K24

WWE 2K24 is an upcoming professional wrestling sports game currently being developed by Visual Concepts in partnership with 2K Games. It’s set to release on March 8, 2024, and will be the sequel to WWE 2K23. This upcoming installment, especially in its Forty Years of WrestleMania Edition, promises an enthralling journey down memory lane, spanning four decades of unforgettable WrestleMania moments.

The upcoming game will feature spectacular returning game modes and new ones, too. It’ll include MyFACTION, MyGM, MyRISE, Universe, and Showcase, renamed ‘2K Showcase of the Immortals.’ Each will feature enhancements like new cutscenes and matches. Meanwhile, several match types will return, including WarGames, Submission, Hell in a Cell, Extreme Rules, and many more. Due to popular demand, some match types from past WWE games will also make headway in the new game, including Casket and Gauntlet Match.

Story

Unleashed campaign promo in WWE 2K24 and wwe 2k23

As is tradition, the WWE 2K series has been featuring MyRISE, a unique story-based game mode that is arguably one of the most interesting ones available. It has players crafting a wrestling superstar journey for themselves, building a legacy you can be proud of. Essentially, players live out their wrestling dreams by following a real-life male or female WWE wrestler’s journey to stardom. In WWE 2K23, you craft your own wrestler and guide them from rookie to WWE legend. The plot isn’t set in stone. You’re free to put your own spin on it.

A new iteration of WWE 2K23 is choosing between the legacy and the lock career paths. The former follows a second-generation superstar’s life. Meanwhile, the latter follows potentially ‘the next big superstar.’ Each path has its own unique storyline. You’d strive to step out of your aunt’s shadows in the former or attempt to steal a spot at the revered WWE Championship in the latter. Despite some repetitive side quests, the slow burn to victory—finally achieving what each superstar set out to do in the end—proves well worth the time and effort. As a result, WWE 2k23 does a good enough job in MyRISE to stand out.

On the other hand, WWE 2K24’s MyRISE will feature a similar concept, choosing a male or female wrestler and guiding them from a rookie to a world-renowned superstar. The two paths will feature new storylines whose exact details haven’t been confirmed yet. However, we do know new wrestlers will be performing voice-overs for the first time, including Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns. Also, it seems instead of wrestling John Cena, we’ll be trying to beat Roman Reigns. It's pretty exciting, seeing as Roman has been a reigning champion for a significantly long time.

Gameplay

WWE 2k24 is retaining most of WWE 2k23’s gameplay. So, let’s cut to the chase and see what’s new, shall we? So, 2K Games has already confirmed to-die-for changes in WWE 2K24, including the most exciting celebration of the 40-year WrestleMania hallmark via the 2K Showcase… of the Immortals game mode. With Slingshot Tech, 2K plans to seamlessly transition between live-action footage of the most iconic moments in WrestleMania and gameplay, creating the most immersive WWE game to date.

We’re expecting new match types and improvements on returning ones. There are four new mayhem match types, to be specific, including Ambulance, Casket, Gauntlet, and Special Guest Referee. WWE 2k23’s Backstage Brawl plans to add four-player support and new environmental features, from vending machines to breakable control room glass and throwable sodas. Meanwhile, Royal Rumble plans to support up to eight online players.

Oh, there’s more. WWE 2k24 will add new weapon types, like guitars and microphones. You can throw weapons at opponents for extra flair. Don’t worry, though. There’ll be seven real WWE referees to try to keep the peace and add more immersiveness to matches. Further, you can expect improvements in super finisher moves, new paybacks, double title matches, and much more.

Verdict

Above all, WWE 2K24 plans to thrive on more chaos. Imagine throwing soda cans at opponents, especially in multiplayer. Wannabe referees will be spoilt for choice. You’ll be able to dive into multiple players. Sirens will go off as you haul opponents into an ambulance and wheel them off to the hospital to feed off of a straw.

While WWE 2k23 caused a massive stir by introducing WarGames, WWE 2k24 is already making fans giddy. From new cutscenes to donning multiple belts in one match, WWE 2k24 is going heavy on plenty of new exciting stuff for the better. Of course, we can’t really know how everything pans out until we get our hands on WWE 2K24. So far, so good, though.
