To celebrate the upcoming release of Screen Gems’ movie adaptation of Until DawnSupermassive Games has gone ahead and penciled in a fresh and completely revamped version of the original game for PlayStation 5. That’s right, the happy campers are back on Blackwood Mountain for another romp through the Wendigo-imposed twilight period — and in Unreal Engine 5, no less. So, if you’ve been itching to make a return to the choice-centric horror that released back in 2015, then you’re in luck; 2024 will mark the return of Until Dawn, both on the silver screen and on home consoles.

There is a slight change in hands here, though: Supermassive Games isn’t actually working on the remake; Ballistic Moon, a Woking-based independent studio is. Aside from that, here’s everything else you should know about the upcoming reimagining of the cult favorite that touched down on PlayStation 4 back in 2015. Feel old yet?

What Is Until Dawn?

Until Dawn is a third-person, choice-based survival-horror game that fuses cinematic storytelling with fast-paced gameplay and quick-time events. Like its original, the 2024 remake will adopt a relatively short but repeatable storyline that’ll allow players to make crucial decisions throughout the twilight hours. Also like before, the upcoming version will feature the same batch of locations, as well as the game’s iconic characters, personalities, and themes.

“Immerse yourself in a gripping slasher horror rebuilt from the ground up with stunning visuals in Unreal Engine 5,” the elevator pitch reads in part. “Enhanced by movie-like cinematography, refined gameplay mechanics and more, venture into a thrilling exploration of an isolated mountain where nothing is as it seems.”

Story

Until Dawn follows a typical group of teens—a mixed bunch who, in the wake of a prank gone wrong and the unfortunate demise of two of their friends, decide to return to the root of the scene and spend a single night atop Blackwood Mountain. However, there’s an underlying problem that looms beneath the surface, and it’s beginning to make its way to the foot of the cabin in which the friends, oblivious to the dangers on the horizon, occupy.

In a typical Dark Pictures fashion, Until Dawn can be tailored in one of several ways, meaning players can ultimately decide each of the characters’ routes and endings. The question is: who will survive, and who will succumb to the trials of the mountain long before the climax takes form? The story, really, is in your hands.

Gameplay

If you’ve ever so much as grazed the tip of the iceberg of any of the entries in The Dark Pictures Anthology, then you’ll no doubt have a good idea of how Until Dawn plays out. With complete control over all of the characters in the story, you will need to decide which courses to take, which dialogue to choose, and of course, which characters to sacrifice or save for the greater good. With multiple endings to unlock, you will have the opportunity to relive the same highlights time and time again, and with any luck, secure an outcome that results in every teen surviving…until dawn. Cue the clown nose honk.

According to Ballistic Moon, “the original game has been rebuilt from the ground up—utilizing cutting-edge visual technology to bring the nightmare to life.” In other words, it isn’t a simple rehash of an old game, nor is it a direct port with a few minor tweaks. It is, from the looks of it, a completely revamped version of the base game, complete with a “brand-new musical score and reauthored audio that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the journey.”

In addition to the overhauled visuals and audio, 2024’s Until Dawn will also take full advantage of the DualSense’s technical capabilities, which include its adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and 3D audio tech. It’ll also push the PlayStation 5’s ultra high-speed SSD, allowing you to “stay fully immersed in the heart-pumping horror and face your fears without a moment’s respite.” So, a bit more than a generic port, after all.

Development

As a reminder, Until Dawn isn’t being revamped by Supermassive Games; rather, a UK-based indie studio known as Ballistic Moon. Announced at the end of January of this year, the team brought news of the upcoming version during PlayStation’s State of Play—an online event that essentially showcases all of the biggest announcements and updates.

Until Dawn has remained a core, genre-defining horror experience for players since its release almost a decade ago,” PlayStation wrote in a recent blog post. “We are now taking these amazing foundations and adding more emotional depth, an enhanced look, and a completely new soundscape that a game with such a strong legacy deserves.”

Until Dawn will be arriving on PlayStation 5 and PC as an exclusive title at some point in 2024. Naturally, we can chalk out the prospect of it being on Xbox Series X|S, then. Not that this comes as much of a surprise, mind you, what with the original also being locked to PlayStation 4.
