Project Baxter: Everything We Know

Let’s face it. ‘Play it your way,’ may just be the future of gaming. No one wants restrictions anymore. It's probably just a basic canvas with a set of rules. But afterward, it’s much more thrilling and rewarding to carve your own path and consequent adventure. As you may already know, Dungeons & Dragons is probably the best game ever to set the trend for free will. Sure. The tabletop RPG has rules and dice to guide you. But, ultimately, what makes it so special is the stretch of wild imagination people can come up with.

On that thread, it’s exciting to see a new D&D game currently in the works. Codenamed ‘Project Baxter,’ we’re gradually unraveling exciting concept art and gameplay to expect when the game launches. So, let’s unravel those ideas, shall we? Here’s everything we know about the upcoming Project Baxter.

What is Project Baxter?

Project Baxter

Project Baxter is an upcoming cooperative storytelling multiplayer game set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. It’s currently in development by Starbreeze Entertainment in partnership with Wizards of the Coast. While there have been many Dungeons & Dragons-based games over the years, 2023’s Baldur’s Gate 3 remains the best adaptation yet in recent memory.

It definitely sets the bar high for Starbreeze, especially with regards to faithfully adapting the essence and captivating experience of playing Dungeons & Dragons games. Of course, we can never have enough Dungeons & Dragons to go around, but hopefully, Starbreeze keeps up the trend and far outdoes the competition while at it.

Story

Besides the concept art on the Starbreeze Project Baxter website that helps give a small visual hint of what to expect from the characters and locales, we don’t know the exact story details. We can, however, anticipate a Dungeons & Dragons style of storytelling, given that Project Baxter will be set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Perhaps similar characters and locales from the tabletop RPG, and possibly using the latest edition ruleset for gameplay.

Still, if the best D&D-based games are anything to go by, Project Baxter will likely offer an immersive adventure exploring a captivating world.

Plus, according to the game’s website, “the game will feature the signature game cornerstones of Starbreeze's productions; co-operative multiplayer, lifetime commitment through a games-as-a-service model, community engagement and a larger than life experience.”

Exciting stuff ahead.

Gameplay

Project Baxter

Project Baxter will be an action adventure, as the CEO of Starbreeze helps clarify, and a cooperative multiplayer game. It’ll use the powerful Unreal Engine 5 to render immersive, quality-of-life visuals. Additionally, the game will feature cross-play, allowing players on all major platforms to duke it out with one another freely. It’ll also feature Starbreeze’s M.O. to curate community-engaging games as well as ‘lifetime commitment through a Games-as-a-Service model.’ Besides that, details about the specific gameplay remain scarce. However, we’ll be sure to update you as Starbreeze rolls out new information.

Development

Developer Starbreeze Entertainment is currently working on developing and publishing Project Baxter in partnership with Wizards of the Coast. Starbreeze is known for developing a good chunk of impressive games, including Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Payday: The Heist, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, Dead by Daylight, and Raid: World War II, among many more. Clearly, this isn’t at all Starbreeze’s first rodeo—at least as far as curating immersive adventures, meticulously crafted strategies, and fantastic multiplayer gigs are concerned. So, we’re definitely holding out hope that Project Baxter will stand out from the myriad of Dungeons & Dragons-based games out there and leave a lasting mark in gaming history to remember.

With regards to said partnership, Eugene Evans, head of SVP, Digital Strategy & Licensing at Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, seems pretty excited over the partnership with Starbreeze, saying: “Our collaboration with Starbreeze is a prime illustration of our strategy. Given their impressive games and passion for Dungeons & Dragons, we are confident that they will create an experience that will delight fans worldwide.” Wizards of the Coast is responsible for publishing Dungeons & Dragons. So, to see them endorse Starbreeze and give them the go-ahead is pretty soothing.

Meanwhile, Tobias Sjogren, CEO of Starbreeze Entertainment, expresses excitement over developing the project, saying: “It is hard to imagine a better pairing than Dungeons & Dragons and Starbreeze—both with their foundation in cooperative and community-driven experiences, ‘play it your way’ and infinite replayability. Development of the game is in full swing, and we are excited to deliver an amazing Dungeons & Dragons action adventure in 2026.”

So, there you have it. Development is well underway, you only need to hold on a little longer till the game drops in a few years.

Unfortunately, we don’t have a trailer out yet. Project Baxter’s name itself is an internal codename for an untitled upcoming game that’s still a long way off from launch. Still, you can always check out the concept art on the Starbreeze Project Baxter website, which helps give a small, rough idea of what to expect.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

Project Baxter

Project Baxter will hit the stores sometime in 2026. It’s still a couple of years away, which makes sense as the project has only recently been announced to be in development. You can expect, though, to play the game on all major platforms, featuring cross-play. For now, the specific platforms remain unclear. And rightly so, as in 2026, next-gen consoles are likely to be all the rage. Still, it’s likely current-gen consoles will also have representation come launch day.

Starbreeze is yet to announce any editions that’ll be available. It makes sense with the project still in its very, very early stages. But, hey, why not follow Starbreeze’s official Twitter handle here to keep track of new updates? Alternatively, stay tuned right here on gaming.net, where we post breaking news as soon as it comes up.
