PlayStation VR2 Vs Meta Quest 2

Every year, the world of VR gaming makes bigger and more significant strides with better technology, visuals, and overall performance. The only issue is that the price tag tends to rise as a result. Meaning, the best, most realistic, and most immersive VR experiences are frequently out of most gamers' budgets. So what does that leave you with? Well, it leaves you in the more than capable hands of the PlayStation VR2 and Meta Quest 2. These two headsets still deliver great quality but at a fraction of the price. Of course, that leaves us with one burning question. Which is the better VR headset? That's where we come in.

In this comparison, we determine which VR headset is better: the PlayStation VR2 or Meta Quest 2. How will we do this? Firstly, by looking into the details of their technical specifications, as well as a broader look at their gameplay and graphics. But first, let's meet the two candidates competing today.

What is PlayStation VR2?

The PlayStation VR2 is PlayStation's second-generation virtual reality headset, that works in tandem with the PS5. That means, it is not a standalone headset and requires the PS5 to function properly. Nonetheless, it is state of the art, releasing this year on February 22, 2023. Of course, included with the headset itself are the PS VR2 Sense controllers and stereo headphones.

What is Meta Quest 2?

The Meta Quest 2, on the other hand, is an all-in-one, standalone VR headset. Meaning, you don't need any exterior hardware for it to function. Releasing on October 13, 2020, it is the older brother of the Oculus Quest headset, just bearing a slight name change. Included with it, are the Two Touch Controllers.

The Meta Quest 2's main selling point is that it is a standalone VR headset that is inexpensive in comparison to its competitors. Is this, however, enough to consider it a better VR headset than the PS VR2, its main competitor?

Tech Specs

In terms of technical specifications, determining which is the better VR headset comes down to two critical categories: resolution and refresh rate. These are the two categories that will provide you with the best “picture” when gaming, as higher resolution means more pixels and thus sharper graphics. Furthermore, the faster the refresh rate, the higher the FPS and smoother your image will appear.

PS VR2:

Panel Resolution: 2000 x 2040 Per Eye

Refresh Rate: 90Hz, 120Hz

Although the resolution and refresh rate of both headsets is nearly identical, the PS VR2 has a slight advantage over the Meta Quest 2. It has a marginally higher resolution per eye, and while both headsets support 90 Hz, the PS VR2 also supports 120 Hz. Looking at the numbers, we would have to say that the PS VR2 is the better VR headset.

Meta Quest 2:

Panel Resolution: 1832 x 1920 Resolution Per Eye

Refresh Rate: 60, 72, 90 Hz

Having said that, the difference between the two isn't that significant. So, while the PS VR2 has better tech specs, it's not a drastic difference from the Meta Quest 2, and we wouldn't consider it a deal breaker. You're going to get a great picture out of both VR headsets, just a slightly better one from the PS VR2. The real deal breaker to determine which is the better VR headset for you also depends on whether you want a standalone VR or not, as well as the games you intend to play.

Gameplay

Of course, the cast of games each VR headset features is a key factor in determining if it's better. Because the Meta Quest 2 is a standalone VR headset, it includes far more games than the PS VR2. It will include more indie titles and the majority of major VR releases unless they are exclusive. That's where PS VR2 has an advantage, with exclusive VR titles like Horizon Call of the Mountain and Resident Evil Village VR. These are some of the best VR games to date, and they are only available on PS VR2. The catch, of course, is that the PS VR2 requires a PlayStation 5. In either case, you'll get a great overall gameplay experience and neither VR headset will let you down.

Verdict

There is no definitive answer to which VR headset is better, between the PS VR2 and Meta Quest 2. The answer really boils down to personal preference and whether or not you own a PS5. If you do, we see no reason why you shouldn't go with the PS VR2. It has a higher refresh rate and resolution. Furthermore, it has top-notch exclusives, which are some of the best VR games around currently. It's also worth noting that many PS5 games are now also compatible with PS VR2. As a result, you have more options for how you want to play.

If you don't have a PS5, however, the Meta Quest 2 is the better option. Whether you play on Xbox, PC, or neither and just want to try out VR, the Meta Quest 2 is the perfect standalone VR headset. It's convenient for anyone who is new to or exploring VR for the first time. What's more, it too, has some great games and shares many titles with the PS VR2. It's just those pesky little exclusives the PS VR2 is running away with.

Nonetheless, at the end of the day, we can't say which VR headset is better for you. It all comes down to your gaming setup and personal preferences. However, you'll be reassured to know that no matter which option you choose, you'll be in good hands.
