New Lord of the Rings Game Coming From Private Division and Weta Workshop Announced

Weta Workshop and Private Division are developing a new Lord of the Rings game that will take place in the literary world rather than the film one.

The private division, a subsidiary division of Take Two, announced the news via a post on Twitter. Weta has teamed up with Private Division to create a new game set in Middle-earth. The developer also worked on the original Peter Jackson movies and Amazon's The Rings of Power. Weta Workshop will develop the game, and the Private Division will handle the publishing.

“We’re thrilled to announce that we have partnered with Weta Workshop to publish a new game set in the literary Middle-earth universe of J.R.R. Tolkien,” revealed Private Division. “We look forward to sharing more about the project in the future.”

The game, which is yet to be named, is in the early stages of development and will be released in 2024. However, Private Division's statement doesn't go into much detail about the game. According to the statement from Private Division, the game is based on the literary Middle-earth setting. So, we cannot expect to see Elijah Wood or Martin Freeman. The game's plot will closely follow Tolkien's original books and set it apart from current films and TV shows.

“It’s a privilege to create a new game set in Middle-earth, especially one that’s so different from what fans have played previously,” Amie Wolken, Weta Workshop head of interactive, said. “As fans ourselves, we’re excited for gamers to explore Middle-earth in a way they never have before and introduce new fans to the magic of The Lord of the Rings.”

Weta Workshop previously worked on Netflix's The Witcher and Stranger Things. The studio is famous for its visual effects in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film franchises. The studio established a gaming subsidiary in 2014, which will be responsible for developing the game.
