Harmony: The Fall of Reverie — Everything We Know

To our utmost suprise, it was actually Don't Nod studio that caught our attention at this year's Nintendo Direct event. In a rather timely fashion, the developer lifted the veil on Harmony: The Fall of Reverie, an entirely new “unique narrative experience” that stems from the same creative minds that conceived Life Is Strange. So, what do we know about it, then?

On the bright side, eager fans won't have to wait all that long to play it, as the recently released preview trailer did go on to staple a June 2023 launch window to it. Curious to learn about the rest of it? Here's everything you need to know before placing that all-important pre-order over on Steam.

What Is Harmony: The Fall of Reverie

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie is an upcoming visual novel by Don't Nod, a studio best known for its history of story-driven works including Life Is Strange, Twin Mirror, and Tell Me Why. In the latest venture, players are cast as Polly, an out-of-town ex-villager who possesses a gift that allows her to tread between realities and alter the future of the deities' and her own via the power of the Aspirations of Humanity.

True to the Don't Nod formula, Harmony: The Fall of Reverie builds on the choices you make along the way. As Harmony, a goddess with the gift of clairvoyance, you will have the power to develop the narrative and decide what comes of both realities. With an entire network of options and pathways to spiral down, each sitting will see you unravelling a completely different story arc. But what's the story about, exactly?

Story

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie follows the story of Polly, a young woman who returns home in search of her missing mother. Upon returning to her former home, “she soon discovers that she has a gift of clairvoyance that connects her to Reverie, the realm of the Aspirations of Humanity: Glory, Bliss, Power, Chaos, Bond, and Truth” the blurb continues in part. “In this world, Polly becomes Harmony, a goddess who has the power to choose the Aspiration that will ultimately rule over Reverie and restore the delicate balance between the deities’ world and ours.”

Gameplay

Given the fact that this is indeed Don't Nod material—a studio known for creating choice-based video games—you can certainly expect a lot of dialogue, cinematics, and interconnecting story arcs. It hasn't been said yet whether or not the game will include anything outside of its visual novel format, though it is clear that the bulk of the gameplay will revolve around decision-making and hopping between realities.

“See into the future and explore the consequences of possible choices in the Augural, a game board and visual representation of Polly's gift of foresight,” the official blub explains. “In pursuing whichever destiny you desire, you’ll also bond with and obtain crystals from the Aspirations. These will unlock different paths at important crossroads that will change how the thread of the story unravels, and ultimately the fate of humanity.”

Development

As Harmony: The Fall of Reverie is something of a late arrival, it does mean a lot of its key details have yet to be announced. That said, with the game set to launch as early as June, it does mean we'll be likely to see more light shed on it over the next few weeks. As for what Don't Nod will unveil in the near future is still anybody's guess, though some core gameplay elements would definitely suffice at this point.

We are excited to reveal Harmony: The Fall of Reverie,” Don't Nod CEO Oskar Guilbert said in a press release. “It is a unique game in its narration with an incredible art direction. We hope players will find this experience stunning and refreshing and that the unique narrative will connect deeply with them. We can’t wait to show more soon.”

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie - Reveal Teaser

The good news is, there is in fact a trailer to go alongside the initial announcement. Although it doesn't give a great deal away as far as gameplay goes, it does cast a light on the general aesthetic of the game. Chances are, Don't Nod will bring something else to the table in the weeks leading up to its June release—a launch trailer, no doubt. You can see the original announcement trailer that was shown at the Nintendo Direct event above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie will be coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC via Steam on an undisclosed date in June 2023. Will it be coming to Game Pass or PlayStation Plus? It hasn't been said yet, though chances are it'll be eligible for either platforms at some point, given Don't Nod's close relationship with the two.

Another question that's been popping up since Don't Nod made the announcement at Nintendo Direct is whether or not the game have any special editions outside of its base copy. To set the record straight, there are no current plans to release the game with any deluxe or collector's editions. Instead, you'll have to get your fix Steam by adding it to your Wishlist here.
