Go-Go Town! — Everything We Know

Prideful Sloth has announced Go-Go Town!, an all-new city-building sandbox game for consoles and PC. Like other games of its kind, its goal is to have you, an aspiring mayor of a backwater town, breathe new life into the surroundings and return it to its former glory to help drive tourism. Ring any bells? Animal Crossing: New Horizons, anyone?

Of course, there's still a fair bit we don't know about the ambitious farming sim, and there's certainly a lot that remains to be desired. Having said that, the details Prideful Sloth has already brought to light are definitely enough to turn a few heads. And so, if you, like us, are eager to learn more, then be sure to read on. Here's everything you need to know about it.

What Is Go-Go Town!?

If you was to merge Overcooked's cutesy art style with Animal Crossing: New Horizons' farming sim gameplay, you'd more than likely have in your hands the foundations for Go-Go Town!. A city-building and farming simulator by heart, the quirky sandbox game will have you governing a quaint town and its citizens, as well as implementing innovative ideas to help drive tourism and return it to its former glory.

In Prideful Sloth's words: “Plan, Build…Prosper? As mayor, it’s up to you to breathe life back into this rundown town. Construct shops, hire staff, automate deliveries with couriers, and attract tourists to town, all while managing infrastructure and avoiding catastrophes! Who said being mayor was going to be easy…”

Story

It goes like this: you're the newly appointed mayor of the “rundown” world of Go-Go Town—a derelict tourist spot that's no longer in its prime and on the precipice of vanishing from the map. Your role, as the general overseer of the somewhat forgetful biome, is to develop new innovations to return it to its former self, as well as reawaken its sleepy citizens. Therein lies the problem: Go-Go Town, as charming as it once was, is now swimming in technical faults, crumbling buildings, and outdated rules. Oh, and not to mention the calamities that naturally gravitate toward its borders.

The purpose of your visit is simple: bring citizens to Go-Go Town, either by building new tourist spots, or befriending outsiders and having them lend you a hand in scouting out new opportunities. Here, it's your world, and you'll have to do all in your power to keep the dust-smothered town from fading into nothingness. It's a good job you've all the tools and skills to make a real difference, then.

Gameplay

To say Go-Go Town! is a city-building game by heart would be an understatement. Truth is, nearly every element it draws upon is highly reminiscent of games like New Horizons, Coral Island, and Dreamlight Valley. And, you know, fair enough, as it's a formula that has worked countless times before on a multitude of platforms. It's rags-to-riches city-building, clear as day, and brings oceans of hours of sandbox entertainment with it.

On top of renovating buildings and “avoiding catastrophes”, you'll also have to juggle your staff and finances, as well as scout out new technology to help attract tourists. As mayor, it'll be entirely up to you to balance the books and infrastructure, meaning the weight of Go-Go Town will be on your shoulders, from the moment you pick up the reins, to the second you announce your departure. No pressure, then.

Prideful Sloth: “Will you build an arcade with a dance game and neon lights? But then again, wouldn’t it be great to have a burger joint in town? And what goes better with a burger, than somewhere to buy ice cream and milkshakes. And what about souvenirs? Who wouldn’t want a memento from Go-Go Town!”

Development

Prideful Sloth, a studio best known for Grow: Song of The Evertree, and Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles, announced Go-Go Town! in the most traditional way possible: as part of a preview trailer over on its social media handle. Since teasing the game, the Australia-based studio has painted a rough 2024 release window on the project, and has reinforced its trailer by saying it'll come to both consoles and PC.

It's early days yet, but there is of course an option to wishlist the game over on Steam to help whet your appetite. If you're interested in keeping tabs on the game, you can do that here.

Caught your interest? If so, you'll probably be happy to hear that Prideful Sloth did, in fact, release a sneak preview trailer of Go-Go Town! earlier today. Granted, it doesn't give a great deal of the actual premise away, but it does shed light on a few of its gameplay elements. You can see it for yourself in the embed above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Go-Go Town! will be coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC via Steam in 2024. A release date hasn't been specified, though it is likely Prideful Sloth will narrow it down over the coming months. Q3 2023, if we're lucky.

It's early days, which means the devs are still ironing out the creases in order to make the city-building title the best it can possibly be. Due to its primary focus being shifted onto the overall development of the game, it's unlikely we'll be seeing anything like special editions anytime soon. But this doesn't mean it'll release without any, though, as most games tend to receive an announcement highlighting the versions in the three, maybe four months before the go-live date. Whatever the case, we'll let you know if and when the news comes knocking.
