Because of the increased immersion, VR makes horror games ten times scarier. It goes without saying, but these games are not for the faint of heart. They will undoubtedly raise the hairs on the back of your neck, give you goosebumps up and down your arms, and have you creaming like a little girl in the middle of the night. Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted - Launch Trailer | PS VR

Of course, we have to kick this list of the scariest VR games off with a classic title, Five Night at Freddy's: Help Wanted (FNAF). Despite releasing four years ago, FNAF is still going strong in 2023. Gamers are returning to this game now more than ever because the sequel is also due to hit our screens in late 2023. That being, Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted 2. That game will undoubtedly be scarier than its predecessor, and we're all for it.

Nonetheless, if we want to best Freddy Fazbear and make it out alive in the sequel, best hit the training ground in FNAF first. Just be ready for the indefinite jump scares and moments that will have your heart racing at 100 MPH. But, what else did you expect from 2023's scariest VR games?

4. Phasmophobia

Phasmophobia - Official Announcement Trailer

We usually get our paranormal fix from a movie or a TV show. That way, we can be snugly wrapped in a blanket on the couch and safely observe others being tormented by a ghost. However, if you've got the nerve to fill their shoes, you can in Phasmophobia. This up-to-four-player psychological horror game has you entering haunted environments and trying to figure out what kind of ghost is haunting them. Just be warned that not all of these ghosts are friendly. In fact, some are out to kill you, while others enjoy playing with their food.

So buckle up, because you're definitely not in the driver's seat in Phasmophobia. The best part is that you're not alone on the ride. You can play Phasmophobia with up to four friends, which definitely helps take the edge off and makes room for some much-needed laughter. Nonetheless, if you're brave enough, try a few solo runs and you'll see why Phasmophobia is one of the scariest VR games of 2023.

3. Visage

Visage — Release Gameplay Trailer

Visage falls under the same concept as Phasmophobia. It's a psychological horror game in which you investigate a haunted house. However, unlike Phasmophobia, Visage lacks a plethora of maps to explore and ghosts to hunt. Visage, on the other hand, takes place in a central haunted house where evil, terrible, and even unspeakable things have happened to the family who once lived there. And, rather than tracking down this family in their supernatural form, you begin to relive their horrific pasts as you discover more of the house. Sounds like fun, right?

Visage is a bit more of a slow burn, but it surely doe's its job of getting your heart racing. The house itself is filled with terrifying, ever-changing environments and a ton of outer-worldly encounters. Its constant ambient and chilling atmosphere never puts you at ease, which is why we consider it to be one of the scariest VR games of 2023.

2. Blair Witch

Blair Witch: Oculus Quest Edition

If you've seen the film, then you know what you're signing up for with the Blair Witch for Oculus. Cold, dark nights in the woods, where only shadows and sounds fill your mind. Cultist sightings of satanic worship and evil. In fact, Blair Witch is an evil game through and through. Its slow pent-up horror never lets up, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat at all times. As a result, it's definitely one of the darker entries on this list of the scariest VR games.

The plot revolves around Ellis Lynch, a man who gets lost in the woods while looking for a missing child. And luckily for you, you're a part of the next search party. Let's just hope history doesn't repeat itself and you too go missing.

1. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard | Launch Trailer | PlayStation VR

Of course, arriving in the number one spot for the scariest VR games in 2023, we have Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. It's no secret that the Resident Evil franchise has always been open to gore and other grotesque elements. However, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, takes it to the next level. They even crank the dial-up on horror, jump scares, and things that will haunt you in your sleep.

At the same time, they don't solely aim to scare the socks off you. The gameplay in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is wrapped in an excellent narrative. As a result, you can't help but continue pushing to get to the bottom of the story. It's one of the best VR horror games to date if not the best, and our top pick for the scariest VR games of 2023.
