Splitgate 2: Everything We Know

1047 Games recently announced that it will release Splitgate 2 in 2025. The original Splitgate saw a massive success following its launch in 2019 as it opened up a ton of possibilities with its mind-blowing mechanics of portals and blended elements of arena shooters. The sequel is expected to introduce unique gameplay while maintaining the core elements of the original Splitgate, which fans believe was a mashup of Halo games and Portal. What is Splitgate 2? 

Splitgate 2 is a rebranded version of Splitgate, a 4v4 multiplayer shooter game that became an overnight success following its release in 2019. According to developer 1047 Games, Splitgate 2 is designed from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. The game is expected to come with notable upgrades, including a new faction-based system. The system will have three unique factions, each with its own style of play. Based on the recently released trailer, unlike the original game, Splitgate 2 will have a single-player narrative mode. The sequel’s keen emphasis on lore has a lot of gaming enthusiasts looking forward to enjoying it in 2025. 

Story 

While the trailer doesn’t say much about Splitgate 2’s lore, the game is fundamentally based on the original Splitgate. The only difference is that Splitgate 2 comes with three distinct factions, as stated earlier. In Splitgate 2, you’ll be taking the role of a warrior in a 4v4 battle setup as you compete for glory in a galactic arena. The arena is set up in a world where survival hinges on how well you’ve honed your skills. In this game, you’ll need to out-maneuver your enemies in front of 100,000 spectators. You’ll be competing against advanced civilizations equipped with advanced technology. So, you’ll use the ultimate tool- a portal gun to attack and defeat your enemies from unexpected angles and defeat them.

One of the main goals in this game is to earn the respect of the entire galaxy. In that case, you’ll need to capture and take control of the “Hotzone” while your friends defend you against enemies portalling from different directions. Essentially, you’ll be relying on teamwork to overpower your enemies and occupy the first place in the leaderboard. 

Gameplay 

While the trailer didn’t reveal much about its gameplay, the 1047 Games CEO hinted that Splitgate 2 will not revolve around killing each other to save humanity or defeat evil. It’ll be more of a sport. The game will have three distinct factions, each with its own playstyle. So, instead of heroes. Splitgate 2 focuses on recapturing the unique experience that gamers enjoy in the original Splitgate, which is more of an arena shooter than a strategic shooter. Splitgate 2 revolves around using portals for combat in a highly-intensive battlefield. 

One of the thrilling experiences in the original Splitgate is landing a no-scope headshot on your confused enemy from behind while they are still focused on your previous position. The features of the original Splitgate include a competitive leaderboard and ranking system, grindable challenges, 15+ casual and competitive game modes, and over 120 maps. Each of the maps in the original game has a distinct look, feel, and gameplay. It allows you to adapt your strategies to succeed in this fast-paced, portal-centric combat-style game. The best part is that all these features are free, and you can team up with your friends regardless of the platform on which they play the original Splitgate. 

In Splitgate 2, it takes a team to scoop the victory. However, only one person will be able to top the leaderboard in this sequel. It brings you futuristic maps and distinctive objective-based modes. Its gameplay revolves around growing your skills to unlock new capabilities for each of the three factions. 

Development 

A group of 150 developers have been working on Splitgate 2 since 2022 to offer players a more enhanced gaming experience. The team comprises talents who worked on Halo, Call of Duty, Valorant, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, God of War Ragnarok, and League of Legends. As noted earlier, the game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and is expected to deliver a more evolved gameplay while offering a fresh and modern look. It’s expected to offer an even better arcade-like experience of the original Splitgate with its large variety of weapons, arenas, and modes designed to help you join battles regardless of your skill level. According to Proulx, all these features are new because they had to build the game from the ground up. 

Trailer 

1047 released Splitgate 2’s official trailer on their official YouTube channel. The vibrant cinematic trailer shows a futuristic arena with specific playstyles. Apparently, the sequel will be combining the inspiration from Halo with more modern development to offer more innovative gameplay. 1047 Games also announced the launch of Splitgate 2’s companion app for Android and iOS devices. Once you install the app, you’ll be able to access the sequel’s comic book, which will introduce you to its universe, story, and the collectibles you’d use to earn in-game rewards.  According to the 1047 CEO, the game will remain free to play, and more information about the sequel will be released in August.   

Release Date and Platforms 

Splitgate 2 will come out around the second half of next year. In an interview with IGN, the 1047 Games co-founder and CEO, Ian Proulx, noted that Splitgate 2 will be available on PC, PS4, PS5, Steam, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Epic Games Store. Although the original Splitage is said to have been developed in a dorm, it was quite a sensation. The game garnered 10 million downloads within 30 days. Based on the trailer released by 1047 Games, gaming enthusiasts believe that Splitgate 2 will be even bigger and better.
