Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II — Everything We Know

Bulwark Studios and Kasedo Games are gearing up for the release of Warhammer 40000: Mechanicus II. The original, Warhammer 40000: Mechanicus II, was a resounding success, capitalizing on grimdark sci-fi storytelling and worldbuilding. It garnered critical acclaim, and now we’re about to get our hands on the sequel, picking up where the predecessor left off.
The fate of the galaxies will soon be in your hands. Will you fight on behalf of the evil or the lesser evil? Gather your troops. Lean on your strengths. This one’s about to get strategically messy. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II.
What is Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II?
Every year, the Games Workshop’s Warhammer Skulls Showcase event announces upcoming games based on the classic tabletop wargame, Warhammer 40K. There’s quite a ton available to play right now, each building on the Warhammer franchise.
At the recent 2024 event, the headliner was Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II, an upcoming fast-paced, tactical combat game that will serve as the direct sequel to the critically acclaimed, turn-based strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus I, released back in 2018.
The Mechanicus faction had long been left hanging out to dry. Now, with a sequel on the horizon, the series seems to be shaping up for a more long-term stay.
Story
Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II plans to build on top of the foundation laid by its predecessor. It continues the Mechanicus narrative, with the Necrons and the Adeptus Mechanicus at each other’s throats. Vargard Nefershah of the Necrons awakes from a deep slumber to find the Adeptus Mechanicus have staked their claim on her world. She vows to lead the Necrons to wipe them all out.
But, on the other side of the war, Magos Dominus Faustinius of the Adeptus Mechanicus prepares to protect his faction. The conflict soon builds up into a full-scale battle. Whichever side wins will be all up to you. Your decisions will impact the outcome of the story. Precisely because you get to choose which faction to take charge of.
That’s right. You’ll have free rein over which faction to support, with the Necrons and the Adeptus Mechanicus both playable factions. Depending on the faction you choose, the narrative will take a completely different turn. What’s more? You’ll have two campaigns to take on, each unique in story and play styles. So, really, you have one most important decision: which faction will you lead to victory?
Gameplay
Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II will combine fast-paced tactical combat with strategy management. Depending on the faction you choose, you will have command over the faction’s garrison. The garrison will have soldiers with unique skills and abilities. So, besides your entire faction specializing in specific strengths, you’ll also have individual soldiers to consider.
You’ll deploy your garrison on the battlefield to destroy your opponents. Combat will take place in turn-based tactical battles. Furthermore, you’ll need to manage environmental mechanics to achieve victory. The Adeptus Mechanicus faction can take cover behind terrain, for example. However, the Necrons thrive on environmental destruction.
The goal is to fight for control of the world. While making a tough ask, you’ll veer closer to the goal, one brick at a time. You’ll capture regions, region by region, and defend them against opponents. You’ll also gather and manage crucial resources for the sustenance of the regions under your control.
The more you play, the more you’ll upgrade and customize your faction to your play style. You’ll manage your garrison as Vargard Nefershah or Magos Dominus Faustinius, ensuring to choose fighters and upgrades wisely.
All along, you’ll immerse yourself in grim, dark darkness. Critically acclaimed composer Guillaume David returns to deliver a doubtlessly epic music score and audio design. Warhammer promises “highly detailed and authentic environments” that bring characters and the Warhammer 40K universe to life.
Development
Developer Bulwark Studios and publisher Kasedo Games are currently working on Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II. They have only just officially announced the game. So, they’re likely still in the very early stages of development. We do know veteran author Ben Counter will bring his masterful penmanship to the upcoming sequel.
You’ve probably read some of his work in his Black Library novels. He’s also the author who worked on the first game, whose story was brilliantly crafted. Counter plans to bring multiple campaigns, profound narrative events, and more. And, of course, the brilliant composer Guillaume David returns to bring us yet another banger OST.
Trailer
Kasedo Games has released the official announcement trailer for the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus II. It’s quite sinister, wasting no time to set a dreadful and eerie tone all across the video. Sci-fi gamers can take all the fantasy grimdark references to the opening of the original.
“From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me,” kicks us off into snippets of the Necron perspective. There are some pretty cool quotes that send tingles down the spine in the video, along with tantalizing snippets of the visuals and story to expect.
