Quest 3 vs PS VR2

With Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's official announcement of the Meta Quest 3, it appears the PlayStation VR2 will finally face some competition in 2023. Despite the fact that these are two very different VR headsets in one major way: one is standalone and the other requires a PS5, we're curious to see how they stack up against one another. We've already compared the Meta Quest 2 to the PlayStation VR2. But now it's time to take it one step further. This time, by comparing the Meta Quest 3 vs the PS VR2.

Will Sony's second-generation VR headset be able to compete with Meta's third-generation VR headset? It's a question that requires us to dive into the technical specifications of both systems, as well as the games and gameplay for each headset. Only then will we be able to determine which headset performs better. Good thing that's exactly what we're doing today in this battle of the Meta Quest 3 vs the PS VR2. So, if you want to know which VR headset is best for you, read on to find out.

What Is Meta Quest 3?

Introducing Meta Quest 3 | Coming This Fall

Announced on June 1, 2023, by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the Meta Quest 3 is Meta's third-generation standalone VR headset. Although we won't be able to get our hands on it until the fall of 2023, there has already been an abundance of information shared about the system's hardware, gameplay, and performance. In comparison to the Meta Quest 2, Meta claims that the Meta Quest 3 has “higher resolution, stronger performance, (and) breakthrough Meta Reality technology.” Although, that doesn't come as much of a surprise.

In fact, we've already pitted the Meta Quest 2 against Quest 3. And, to no one's surprise, the newer but older brother came out on top. The real question now is whether it has “higher resolution” and “stronger performance” than a competing VR headset, like the PS VR2.

What Is PlayStation VR2?

Quest 3 vs PS VR2

The PS VR2 is Sony's second-generation VR headset that works in tandem with the PS5. Meaning, it's not a standalone headset and requires a PS5 console to power and use it. That may be a deal breaker for non-PS5 owners, however, the PS VR2 still puts up a compelling offer. It's currently one of the only console VRs competing with Meta. Its performance has been proven, and its cast of exclusive VR games, as well as PS5-compatible VR games, adds to the overall appeal.

So there's no question about its performance. However, what we're trying to answer today is if it's worth getting a PS VR2 for your PS5, or if you're better off with a standalone VR headset, such as the Meta Quest 3. So, to begin answering that question, let's compare the technical specifications of the Meta Quest 3 vs that of the PS VR2.

Tech Specs

Quest 3 vs PS VR2

Although we have yet to get our hands on the Meta Quest 3, we can still look at its technical specifications to get an idea of the performance it is capable of. We can also compare that to the technical specifications of the PS VR2 to see how the two VR headsets compare.

Meta Quest 3:

  • Display Type: LCD
  • Display Resolution: 2064 x 2208 Resolution Per Eye
  • Refresh Rate: 120Hz

PS VR2:

  • Display Type: OLED
  • Display Resolution: 2000 x 2040 Resolution Per Eye
  • Refresh Rate: 90Hz, 120Hz

Despite the fact that both VR headsets use different types of displays, it is not a deciding factor. The display resolution and refresh rate are what we want to investigate. After all, the more pixels we get in display resolution, the higher the image quality will be. Furthermore, the faster the refresh rate, the smoother the picture will be.

We can see from the tech specs that the Meta Quest 3 has a better display than the PS VR2. Albeit, not by much. However, the PS VR2 matches the 120Hz refresh rate of the Meta Quest 3. Nonetheless, the Meta Quest 3 will most likely produce a better picture than the PS VR2 – but not by much. Still, it's insufficient enough to crown the winner between the Meta Quest 3 vs the PS VR2 just yet. There's still more to the discussion with games and gameplay.

Gameplay

Quest 3 vs PS VR2

In terms of gameplay, we do know that the Meta Quest 3 will be able to run the Meta Quest 2's 500+ game catalog at launch. Having said that, many of those games are also compatible with the PS VR2. In truth, the argument is skewed in favor of the PS VR2, because the VR headset has a list of exclusive titles that come with it. Such as Horizon: Call of the Mountain, Gran Turismo 7 VR, and Resident Evil Village VR. What's more, some exclusive PS5 games are made PS VR2 compatible.

The Meta's list of exclusive games, well let's just say they aren't exactly turning heads. What is, however, is the standalone functionality that makes the Meta Quest easy to pick up and play. Exclusive titles, on the other hand, are a selling factor for the PS VR2.

Verdict

In conclusion, it's difficult to identify a clear winner in this comparison of the Meta Quest 3 vs the PS VR2. What it really boils down to is your setup and preferences. For example, if you own a PC or Xbox console, and are just looking to play VR games without much hassle, we'd say save your money and grab the Meta Quest 3 when it launches.

However, if you already own a PS5 and are debating whether to get the Meta Quest 3 or the PS VR2, stay on course and go with the PS VR2. It costs $550, which is roughly the same asking price as the Meta Quest 3. What's more, the PS VR2 will see more exclusive games down the line. So, your investment will pay off a little bit more with time. Just take a look at what's coming out for the PS VR2 in 2023.
