Unveiled in 2009, the Blood Bowl franchise continues to capture fans' hearts, establishing its unique niche in the gaming realm, even if it doesn't quite reach the heights of XCOM.

Thanks to the commercial triumph of the first game, the franchise embarked on a grandiose journey, unveiling two eagerly awaited sequels: Blood Bowl 2 and Blood Bowl 3. Being the freshest addition to Cyanide's series, the latter promises exciting novelties. So which of the two takes the cake? Let's find out below in Blood Bowl 2 vs Blood Bowl 3. 

What is Blood Bowl 2?

Blood Bowl 2 is the second enthralling installment in the Blood Bowl franchise. The game veers off the original title’s gameplay with a turn-based strategy. If you've not played this game before, allow me to break down the concept. 

Picture the familiar game of American Football, where 11 players from each team clash on the field. You'll feel right at home if you're a devoted NFL enthusiast. However, instead of witnessing the likes of Tom Brady or Joe Montana, prepare yourself for a spectacle featuring ferocious orcs and nimble elves. It's a fantasy rendition that electrifies the experience.

Furthermore, in this fantastical version, the game incorporates the usual maneuvers of running, passing, and handoffs but with a delicious twist. Brace yourself for the “block,” a move that teeters on the precipice of brutality. When executed, it becomes an all-out assault, potentially resulting in the opposing player meeting their demise, getting knocked out, or sustaining injuries. 

The outcome rests upon the roll of a six-sided die, granting you a thrilling one-in-six chance of success. While this unique feature has drawn criticism for its frustration-inducing nature, the game remains an absolute thrill.

What is Blood Bowl 3?

Embarking on the path paved by its predecessor, Blood Bowl 3 adheres faithfully to the turn-based strategy trajectory that continues to captivate fans. This latest addition to the series bursts onto the scene with many fresh features that take the experience to new heights. However, it struggles to match up to Blood Bowl 2's brilliance. 

Foremost, the game maintains the infuriating dice-rolling mechanics, failing to refine or enhance the source of frustration. Secondly, it has a host of problems, including glitches, stalls, and bugs, that interrupt the gameplay. And finally, the whole game feels off, like a rushed project that starts well but meets an awful end. 

Nevertheless, despite these setbacks, the game still manages to provide an enjoyable experience, albeit one that may prove daunting to newcomers to the series. It offers a delightful challenge for those well-acquainted with the franchise's intricacies but could leave novices feeling somewhat overwhelmed.

Gameplay

As far as gameplay goes, both games boast the same kind of play style. However, the striking difference lies in the new features in the latest installment. 

Blood Bowl 3 elevates the gameplay experience, building upon its predecessor's foundation. For starters, the game lets you have multiple re-rolls for every turn. Its predecessor only lets you use one re-roll per turn. A re-roll is more or less a safety net when the odds seem stacked against you. 

Moreover, the new Blood Pass system in Blood Bowl 3 spruces things up. Players can now access custom features, including armor, balls, and dice. The system is a deviant battle pass that spans over three months. Successful completion of the Battle Pass unlocks a new faction. Alternatively, you can pay for the Blood Pass to quickly access these rewards. 

Furthermore, Blood Bowl 3 opens up a layer of new possibilities by allowing all characters to Jump. In Blood Bowl 2, this move is exclusive to Pogo Sticks and Wardancers. However, any character can now use this ability. You may require an enhanced Agility roll to activate it. 

Characters

Blood Bowl 3 unveils a roster of new teams: the Black Orcs, the Imperial Nobility, and the Old World Alliance. These teams bring a thrilling dynamic to the game, and the appearance of the characters themselves undergoes a remarkable transformation. The extensive customization options in Blood Bowl 3 redefine the visual experience. 

Unlike its predecessor, where preset heads were the limit, Blood Bowl 3 allows players to customize various aspects such as shoulder pads, helmets, arm guards, body armor, colors, and even spikes. This unprecedented level of personalization breathes life into the characters, allowing players to forge a unique identity for their teams.

Additionally, Blood Bowl 3 excels in providing players with a newfound sense of freedom in its single-player story campaign. Gone are the limitations of being confined to a human team. Instead, players can craft a team comprising any species and guide them to victory throughout the captivating story campaign, immersing themselves in an unforgettable journey.

Verdict

While Blood Bowl 3 stands as a testament to innovation and creative freedom, which pushes the boundaries of the Blood Bowl universe, it simply doesn't match up to its predecessor. The game lacks variety in its dialogue, and its visuals are lackluster. 

Moreover, the game's heavy emphasis on microtransactions takes away the fun of experimenting with various cosmetics. Considering this is a trend among most games, it's unfortunate that Cyanide Studios opted for this route with its third installment.

Notwithstanding, Blood Bowl 3's added features beckon players to explore its enhanced gameplay mechanics. You can forge your path to glory while relishing the abundance of customization options. 

On the other hand, Blood Bowl 2 goes above and beyond in delivering a splendid experience. Even though it debuted more than seven years ago, it still withstands the test of time by being a better game than its sequel. That said, I will have to side with Blood Bowl 2 on this one.
