When a developer receives overwhelming criticism over their last installment, a lot of expectations are placed on their next installment to incorporate feedback, innovate on the old mechanics, and take the franchise to the next level. This is the precarious position Battlefield Studios finds itself in. The studio’s latest installments haven’t sat well with fans, citing historical inaccuracies, limited content, and technical issues.

What is Battlefield 5?

Battlefield 5 is the 11th mainline installment in the Battlefield military first-person shooter video game series. It was developed by DICE and Electronic Arts, and launched on November 20, 2018, on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC platforms. While its predecessor, Battlefield 1, takes place in World War I, Battlefield 5 takes the battlefield action to a World War II setting. 

In the game, online players team up in squads of up to four. You can choose between Assault, Engineer, Recon (Sniper), and Support roles, and access unique abilities and rewards within your squad. Moreover, it features eight multiplayer game modes, including three new ones.

Some of the game modes include Conquest, which tasks two teams with fighting for control over multiple points of interest. Firestorm challenges squads to be the last team standing. You have Team Deathmatch, where your team seeks to eliminate the opposing team, among other alterations. 

What is Battlefield 6?

Battlefield 6, on the other hand, is an upcoming first-person shooter entry in the Battlefield franchise. It’ll be the 13th mainline installment, developed by Battlefield Studios and published by Electronic Arts. The title has only recently been announced with the release of a reveal trailer on July 24, 2025. While the trailer reveals bits of the story and gameplay, it leaves vital information like the game modes, release date, and more unknown. There’s an upcoming Multiplayer Reveal Event, though, on July 31, 2025, where more concrete gameplay details will definitely be made clear. 

It’s not quite official yet. However, early leaks suggest Battlefield 6 will be arriving on October 10, 2025. It’ll be coming only to current-gen platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms via Steam and Epic Games Store. 

Moreover, early leaks suggest Battle Royale will be returning to Battlefield 6. Conquest and Breaththrough modes are likely to return as well.

Story

In the Battlefield 5 campaign, you play through “War Stories.” The story features a collection of interconnected, lesser-known, and diverse takes on World War II. You go to varied locations around the world, set in different time periods, and unravel the individual and group stories of colonial soldiers, resistance fighters, and more. Overall, these stories aim to shed light on the personal impact of war on different characters, exploring their relationships, motivations, and hardships.

Unfortunately, the story campaign didn’t quite hit the mark with fans. It felt rather short, unfinished, and not particularly engaging, to the extent that you wouldn’t miss out on much skipping it. Still, if you have the time, it doesn’t hurt to briskly peruse through them, given that they do incorporate smooth controls. 

Meanwhile, Battlefield 6 plans to focus on a global conflict instigated by the private military company, Pax Armata. You’ll be free to explore this conflict in a single-player campaign, controlling NATO forces against PAX. This campaign will take you across the globe, engaging in high-stakes battles against PAX.

Gameplay

Battlefield 5 did take a decent step forward, innovating on the gameplay and mechanics of its predecessor, Battlefield 1. It introduces a brand new squad system and improves on the gunplay, enough for the playthrough to feel satisfying, at times addictive, especially for Battlefield fans. You enjoy a smooth and fluid performance and control system, slick visuals, as well as grapple with a decent military grade weapon selection.

Unfortunately, Battlefield 5 launched with a great deal of bugs and technical issues. Some of its features were launched in an unfinished state, and you even navigated through placeholder menus. There have been reported issues of team imbalance as well. 

When the action picks up pace, though, whether across land, air, or sea, you could genuinely enjoy a splendid time. The Battlefield DNA still exists here, in its massive scale and grandeur, be it the immersive explosions and large-scale battlefield mayhem.

We can’t quite speak to Battlefield 6’s gameplay, especially with the multiplayer reveal still a few days away. Early marketing, though, from the teaser trailer shows intense gunplay. Soldiers break walls and navigate tight corners, evading collapsing high-rise buildings and massive explosions. The map appears more compact, suggesting a more grounded return to Battlefield 3 and 4’s feel. 

Flying your fighter jets and controlling military tanks, you can engage in heated dogfights and bring down entire buildings on enemies. Ultimately, the multiplayer and single-player campaign mode you’re used to will likely return. And while much of the gameplay is still unknown, Electronic Arts makes promises of improvements and new features introduced to Battlefield 6.

Verdict: Battlefield 5 Vs Battlefield 6

At the moment, we’re relying on early leaks to ascertain whether Battlefield 6 truly is better than Battlefield 5. Some leaks suggest that players can now drag allies to safety. Apparently, you’ll be able to cling to vehicles to traverse the map faster or for tactical advantage. Movement is rumored to be better. But perhaps the biggest tease is the turned-up level of environmental destruction. The reveal trailer has so many chopper crashes, alongside collapsing story buildings, rocket launchers, and more chaos. 

Battlefield 6 will no doubt remain the same as Battlefield 5 at its core, retaining the Battlefield DNA fans have come to love. However, it’ll also likely add new features and improvements that could potentially make it a more satisfying run. Let’s not forget the numerous bugs and technical issues Battlefield 5 launched with, that we sure to God hope the new entry will be rid of.
