All Party Members Ranked in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

There are a total of seven party members in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Each party member has their own unique moveset and overworld move for Mario to use. Generally, you will encounter one new party member every chapter until you get near the end of the game. You can upgrade them and even use badges to give them an extra advantage in battle. Below, we take a look at both lore and usefulness to determine who is the best party member on our All Party Members Ranked in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year-Door list.

7. Goombella

Boogly Wood Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Goombella is the first party member you encounter in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. You meet her in Rogue Port, and she accompanies you into the game’s first chapter. She is able to give you detailed lore information about areas and has the ability to do the same in battle. The problem is that she’s not a very strong partner even after upgrading her. For lore buffs Goombella is a must, but most players will switch her out the second they meet Koops and never look back. This places her at the very bottom of the list on our All Party Members Ranked in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year-Door list.

6. Admiral Bobbery

Admiral Bobbery is a party member you pick up when you visit Keehaul Coast. Despite appearing much later than Bombette in the original Paper Mario, they are very similar characters. They are able to explode outside of battle, allowing Mario to break open cracked walls. This can also be used to get the first strike on enemies when timed right. Inside of battle, all of his moves are based on exploding on enemies, which does no damage to Bobbery himself.

While some players find his explosions useful, others don’t find his move set nearly as useful as the other party members. While he is way more useful than Goombella, Bobbery isn’t the character people reminisce over when talking out the Thousand-Year Door.

5. Koops

Koops introduction in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Koops is the second party-member you will acquire in the game. He’s found on the way to Hooktail’s Castle and begs to join up with Mario. Koops is able to his multiple enemies at once using his Power Shell move. Outside of battle, he can be used to hit switches or grab items that are just out of reach. Koops also has a bit of a comedic story as his life revolves around his excitable girlfriend Koopie Koo. Koops can be one of the most useful party members for first attacks.

Mario can aim his shell to quickly hit enemies who are distracted or moving towards him. This gives the party an advantage during battle, and Koops likely will be rotated in and out as one of your main party members throughout the game.

4. Madame Flurrie

Flurrie kiss Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Madame Flurrie joins Mario’s team in Chapter 2 when he visits the Boggly Woods. She is an actress who helps Mario to get the second crystal star by using her impressive breath. Madame Flurry is able to blow away enemies on the battlefield using Gale Force. Outside of battle, she can use her gust to reveal hidden areas and blow light objects. When your running through and area and don’t want to be bothered by small fries, she is great at clearing the field for Mario.

Later on, she does get some rather unique moves like Lip Lock that zaps health from enemies to heal herself. She also is able to cloud the field in a fog, upping Mario’s evasion while allowing him to still attack the enemy.

3. Ms. Mowz

Ms. Mowz is one of the last members you will acquire and is completely missable. She can be found in the overworld once have completed Chapter 4. She is tied to the ??? Trouble that you will need to pick up from the quest board. Once you do, you will meet with her and be tasked with finding a rare badge. Completing the mission will get her to join your team.  Ms. Mowz isn’t the best fighter, but her out-of-battle ability is a must. When used, it allows her to sniff the air; if there is a treasure, like a missed badge nearby, then she will let you know.

This is one of the best ways to organically find all the treasures without using guides.  Even though she is an optional character, she ranks third on our All Party Members Ranked in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year-Door list.

2. Yoshi

Yoshi stampede in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Yoshi is picked up in Chapter 3 once you hatch an egg in the Glitz Pit. He is the only party member you get to name yourself and is a tough fighter. Outside of battle, you can ride him as a mount, making it much quicker to traverse the overworld. When you come to a gap, you can hold in the jump button to flutter jump, this allows you to reach cross large gaps without a problem.

Inside of battle, Yoshi is nothing to laugh at. His Ground Pound is an extra powerful jump, and once he learns Stampede, he can deal a large amount of damage to all the on-field enemies.

1. Vivian

Vivian with her sisters in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Vivian is the surprise party member of the game that switches to Mario’s side in Chapter 4. She has the ability to hide Mario from enemies in the overworld. This allows the players to steal around unwanted battles and is especially useful if they are trying to get to a place where they can heal. She can do the same as a skill in battle. When Veil is used, Vivian grabs Mario and drags him into the shadows, allowing him to evade any incoming attacks.
