5 Best Kingdom Hearts Keyblades of All Time, Ranked

The Keyblade plays a pivotal role in Square Enix’s Disney-heavy Kingdom Hearts series and, if you’ll pardon the pun, acts as the key to all the questions that plague the overly complex storyline. But, of course, if you strip away the mind-boggling meaning and lore behind them, then you’re basically left with an arsenal of pretty stylish weapons. And for the sake of this list — that is exactly what we’ll refer to them as: weapons.

Yes, they have the power to unlock magical doors and connect mystical worlds. They also have the strength to divide hearts and retract souls from both friends and foes. But again, it all boils down to the fact that they are, in essence, a bunch of keys that hit things and produce stars and sparks as a result. So let’s look at it that way. Let’s rank the five best Keyblades from the Kingdom Hearts series and see where you stand.

5. Divine Rose

The problem with obtaining the best weapons in a role-playing game, sadly, is that they simply refuse to pop up until the last minute of the story. And in this case, the Divine Rose uproots right around the time you’re ready to gear up and close the curtain. So, unless you’re planning on sticking around near the end to do some additional leveling for the fun of it, then your time with the Divine Rose will be cut pretty short.

That being said, it is the next best thing to the Ultima Weapon which, in all honesty, is an absolute ball-ache to obtain, and also takes another dozen hours just to synthesize. So, the stats may dip ever so slightly compared to the Ultima Weapon, but the Divine Rose is still the most easily obtainable Keyblade in all of Kingdom Hearts. All you need to do to get it is speak to Belle after rescuing the Princesses of Light. After that, you’re golden. Simple.

4. Unbound

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance was known for producing some of the most advanced Keyblades in all of the series, with a great chunk of them locked away in some of the deepest parts of the game. Unbound, being one example, was only unlockable through completing every portal in the game. And while that proved to be a slight hassle for many, its unhinged power definitely made up for it after being acquired.

Remember the Ultima Weapon? You know, the one you had to synthesize using components that were basically non-existent? Yeah, that one. Well, funnily enough, the Unbound Keyblade from Dream Drop Distance was actually punching a little higher in strength. In fact, with a total of 18 points attributed towards its overall power, it is, statistically, the strongest in all of Kingdom Hearts. And to think we spent twenty hours gathering ingredients to craft the Ultima Weapon. Sigh.

3. Oathkeeper & Oblivion

It seems only natural that we slot these two together, seeing as both Oathkeeper and Oblivion represent Sora’s memories with his two best friends, Kairi and Riku. And considering they were both equipped at the same time by Roxas, Sora’s Nobody — it makes sense that they come as a sort of package deal. Although, to be fair, one of them alone has enough power to deface Kingdom Hearts and all its dark counterparts.

Since the launch of Kingdom Hearts, both Keyblades have played crucial parts in Sora’s expedition across the connected worlds. Unlockable only by traversing the lands and unearthing the stories, both Oathkeeper and Oblivion aren’t exactly all that difficult to bag for the inventory. But don’t let that steer you away from the sheer power that each of them relentlessly radiate. They’re both equally as beneficial, as well as all-time fan favourites from the past ten or so years.

2. Ultima Weapon

We hope you like grinding — because you’re about to be sucked into one of the most tedious sessions of your life — you know, providing you actually want to enjoy the fruits that come nestled with the beloved Ultima Weapon. Although, it is worth pointing out that, by the time you tick all the boxes to get the glorious blade, the game is pretty much already wrapped, and you’ll only really use it to gloat to careless NPCs in Traverse Town. That’s it.

Still interested? Alright then. In order to crack the Ultima Weapon, which boasts an impressive 14 Attack, +9 Strength, and +2MP, you’ll first have to synthesize everything from the Moogle Shop, and then locate the necessary ingredients to forge it. The only problem is, is that some of the aforementioned ingredients are basically non-existent. And when they do pop up, the chances of snagging them are quite low. So, quite a lot of work for what is basically an excuse to showboat.

1. X-Blade

Okay, so technically this one is cheating, as it’s not actually a Keyblade that we’ve been able to equip in-game since it first came to light. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s unworthy of holding the top spot on this list. I mean, it does have the power to unlock and control Kingdom Hearts, so you know — that sort of speaks volumes alone.

As the original Keyblade, as well as the most powerful in all of creation, it’s clear to see why we’d put this one at the apex of the list. And let’s be honest here — it’s going to be a legendary weapon in Kingdom Hearts 4 at some point. You know, whenever that decides to roll out. Just so long as we don’t have to defeat Sephiroth for it. Please, Square — don’t let that be a thing.
