Verissa Thomas, Candy Crush Saga All Stars — Interview Series

Updated on

If there was ever a time to succumb to the wealth of sugar-coated goodness of Candy Crush, it would be this week, as developer King has finally lifted the veil on the Candy Crush Saga All Stars tournament—an event that will host a whopping prize pool of a million dollars.

To learn a bit more about the ongoing tournament, as well as learn a few tips and tricks for dominating the candy-wrapped monopoly, I decided to reach out to finalist Verissa Thomas.

Thanks for taking the time to speak with us! Tell us a bit about yourself. How did it all start for you, and what was the fuel that ignited your interest to play video games?

Verissa: My name is Verissa Thomas. I’m 33 years old, and I’m a student at Georgia State University studying Criminal Justice. I’ve been playing Candy Crush since 2013.

So tell us, why Candy Crush? You’ve clearly developed an incredibly strong connection with the game. The question is, what brought you to it?

Verissa: Yes! I’m a huge fan of matching games and puzzles, so of course, I love Candy Crush.

I started playing Candy Crush a few years ago during my commute, and it quickly became my favorite way to pass the time. I was immediately attracted to the colorful graphics and fun puzzles. After long days, playing Candy Crush became my go-to way to relax.

The frequent updates and new levels kept things exciting, and beating tough stages felt amazing. Competing with friends made it even more fun. I love that I can play anytime, anywhere on my phone. Candy Crush has been a constant source of enjoyment and relaxation for me.

We’d love to get some pro tips on how to, well, crush Candy Crush, so to speak. What advice would you give to somehow who’s never experienced a level before?

Verissa: With 11 years of experience, I could say so many things, but the most important tip is to stay positive and have fun! For All-Stars specifically, make sure you’re prepared for the tournament. People worldwide are playing at all different time zones, all with different strategies but with the same goal as you, so dedication is essential! Just like any game or sport, never give up!

Let’s talk about the demographic; statistically, female gamers tend to dominate the mobile gaming scene. Why do you think that is?

Verissa: I can only speak for myself, but I only play when I have free time. As a student, mom of two active boys, and wife, that isn’t much time. But, like most women, I have the superpower of multitasking, which is why mobile gaming is so appealing. I think this is also why we dominate at mobile games! We thrive doing many things at once. And, of course, we need moments of fun and play, and mobile gaming, Candy Crush, in particular, does that for me.

And do you think that the gaming industry, in general, should be more inclusive of female gamers? If you could change any aspect of the online gaming ecosystem, what would it be, and why?

Verissa: Of course! I wouldn’t consider myself a serious gamer, but I love playing Candy Crush and other puzzle games, so I think having more games catered to women’s interests would be great! I’m super girly and love cute, colorful things, which is one of the reasons why I love Candy Crush.

Of course, we believe that gaming should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender, or race. However, do you believe that there are certain games that generate a slightly more positive workspace for female gamers?

Verissa: Candy Crush is all about FUN, which is why I think women enjoy it. It provides a moment to tune out from the hustle and bustle of life and just enjoy a moment to relax and unwind. Although it’s highly competitive in tournament mode, it doesn’t feel that way because it’s so fun, enjoyable, and easy to feel positive while playing!

So, how’s the future looking for you? Do you plan on entering any more tournaments or exploring any new games over the course of the year?

Verissa: That would be determined by where I place in the live final! If I’m knocked out at the bottom, I will compete in All Stars next year and try again. If I place in the top 3, I’ll probably give others an opportunity for this experience! Regardless, I’ll keep playing Candy Crush!

Thanks for your time, Verissa!
