Utah Sports Betting Landscape
To start off, we should point out that Utah is one of only two US states where absolutely all forms of gambling and betting are strictly banned. The only other state to do so is Hawaii, but in Utah’s case, things might be even worse, as the state took progressive steps to ensure that its people will have zero options for any sort of betting at their disposal.
The situation has gotten to the point where House Rep. Jason Chaffetz even attempted to get online gambling banned on a federal level back in 2015. Fortunately, for other states and fans of online gambling — this did not happen. But, the attempt itself goes to show that Utah is so strongly against any form of gambling that it is willing to try and expand its beliefs to the rest of the country.
Apart from being only one of two states where no form of gambling is legal, Utah is also one of only five states that do not have a state lottery. Rep Kera Birkeland questioned the Utah stance on a lottery in 2024 and stated that residents of Utah would vote otherwise if they got a referendum on whether or not there should be a state lottery.
It does not bother lawmakers that Utah’s neighbouring states mostly have legal sports betting. This leaves Utah residents with the option of frequenting international sports betting sites, these are the current best that offer sports betting to Utah residents.
When Will Online Sports Betting Arrive in Utah?
Given the state’s criminal code, the most likely answer is simply — never. While the US states are moving more and more towards sports betting, with many already having it legalized, and many others working on it and trying again and again with each new year, it is unknown what the future carries.
Utah’s criminal code claims that online gambling will be illegal in the state even if it was legalized on a federal level — provided that the ability to opt out of it is allowed by the federal law, of course. If it all stays on the state level, it would take a rather massive change in the state’s leadership, ideology, laws, and potentially the population’s own views on sports betting, which is very unlikely to happen anytime soon.
Legal Betting Options in Utah
Unfortunately, there are no legal betting options in Utah, and the only way for its citizens to access gambling and sports betting is to travel across the border to one of the six other states that have it legalized. Utah is surrounded by gambling-friendly states (except Idaho for now), but that does not mean that the state will ever give in and legalize sports betting itself.
There is another option, although it is a risk for the bettors, and that is to use international sportsbooks that are based and licensed in other countries. While they say that anyone from the US can join, they still do not own any licenses in the country, so their offering is technically illegal. While we did not hear about anyone being arrested for accessing one of these websites, it is worth noting that in Utah, something like that is not out of the realm of possibility.
A greater risk, however, comes from the fact that there is no one to turn to for help if you happen to be scammed by one of the platforms. While we do not expect that something like that would happen if you use a licensed sportsbook, there are many of them that do not own licenses, and using those is as risky as it can get. Licensed platforms could, technically, also try to do something like that, but then they would risk losing their license and the trust of users from all over the world, which is likely not something that they would risk in order to scam their American clients.
Most Popular Sports in Utah
Utah is home to two NBA teams — the Utah Jazz, which has actually been a staple in the NBA for a long time now. Other than that, there is the Bringham Young University men’s basketball team, which is good enough to make the NCAA’s March Madness every few years or so.
In addition to that, Utah is also home to an MLS team, Real Salt Lake, which has been a regular contender, and it even won the MLS Cup some 13 years ago, in 2009.
One thing to note is that Utah actually does have horse racing — it just doesn’t allow betting on it. One surprising thing, however, is that Utah did not explicitly outlaw daily fantasy sports. This is by no means a legal betting option in the state, but it was not made illegal either, which is just enough room that DFS providers like Yahoo!, DraftKings, and FanDuel need in order to be able to accept bets from the locals.
