RPG fans so far are getting quite a kick out of the new releases and upcoming games in the genre this year. And from the looks of it, their excitement will not dull down anytime soon. At the Summer Game Fest this year, a highly anticipated sequel to the famous Mortal Shell game was announced. The original game carved out its niche in the challenging action RPG landscape. Now, the aequal is ready to take on the mantle, promising to test your skills and patience in equal measure. Below, we discuss everything we know about Mortal Shell 2 so far.

What is Mortal Shell 2?

Mortal Shell 2: Everything We Know

The title is an exciting upcoming action role-playing game. Additionally, it is a standalone sequel to Cold Symmetry’s breakout 2020 Soulslike action RPG. It builds upon the first game’s unique core character by introducing more ambitious gameplay mechanics and world design. At its core, Mortal Shell 2 keeps the series’ main feature. The player may possess and use different Shells, which are the dormant forms of fallen warriors.

Each Shell comes with its unique skills and play style. The sequel promises to offer a freer and more exciting battle experience. The game’s creators have focused on making weapons more complex and offering players numerous alternatives for upgrading them. That provides players with additional ways to overcome the game’s obstacles. It also moves toward a more open-ended structure, with what the developers call an interconnected open environment.

It is both compact and expansive at the same time. The design concept suggests that players should focus on exploring dense, crucial areas rather than vast, empty ones. That, in turn, respects players’ time while still allowing them to fully explore and experience the incredible adventure.

Story

Mortal Shell 2: Everything We Know

Mortal Shell 2 follows the narrative of the Harbinger as he takes on his sacred mission. He must get back the blessed Undermether’s stolen Ova from terrifying creatures that protect these unborn creatures. The game is set in a dark and mysterious atmosphere that mirrors the aesthetic of its prequel. Furthermore, the sequel’s plot is very connected to its Shell mechanism. Players will find these dormant forms of forgotten warriors all around the planet. Each one has its unique history and skills. Players not only get unique fighting skills by waking up and taking over these Shells, but they also discover the mysteries of these fallen heroes through memories.

Gameplay

Gameplay

The game features slow, heavy combat where timing and strategy are highly crucial. Additionally, the unique Shell system is back, letting players take on numerous warrior forms, each with its own set of skills and play styles that may completely change how you deal with enemies. What appears most evolved from the original is the combat variety. The unveiling trailer showcased a diverse range of both melee and ranged options.

The previous game had a limited number of weapons. Still, Mortal Shell 2 appears to remedy that with improved weapons, including machine gun crossbows and shotgun-style rifles, as well as standard melee weapons. The larger weapons offer players more tactical options when facing tougher opponents and bosses. Aside from that, the world’s design has undergone significant changes.

It has an immersive, linked open environment that balances freedom and concentration. The developers emphasize that the world is big, but it is also small on purpose. It also has convoluted landscapes and hidden structures that players can explore.

Development

Development of the Game

Cold Symmetry, the genius behind the first Mortal Shell, developed this title with publisher Playstack. The first game, which came out in 2020, garnered so much attention in the Soulslike genre. It got good reviews with its unique Shell concept and atmospheric environment design. However, a few fans and critics did not like the level design or the range of weapons. Luckily for fans, the creators took that into account while making the sequel.

It focuses on a well-designed linked world, a bigger arsenal, and a more unique aural direction. They are adding new weapons and making the battle more diverse. It appears that the soundtrack has received some extra attention as well. The studio also wants to do a beta test on Steam to get feedback from the community throughout the last stages of making the game.

The first trailer for Mortal Shell 2, which was revealed at Summer Game Fest 2025, set the proper dark and aggressive tone for the sequel. The game starts with a loud song by the metal band Behemoth that sets the mood for the game’s dark image and focus on brutal fighting. It also goes great with the dramatic action, making for a trailer packed of heavy metal and spectacular music.

The teaser reveals a lot of upgrades over the original game, such as scenery and character models that are more realistic. The fighting scenes show both the familiar, weighty melee encounters that were a big part of the previous game and new ranged combat choices. They include weapons like crossbows with better mechanics and early guns that bring a new level to the gameplay. Other than that, the trailer presents freaky and deadly enemies and boss characters that will definitely remain imprinted on the minds of players long after they complete the gameplay.

The creatures live in a universe that seems to have a wider range of environments than the first game. There are both tight, closed-in spaces and wide, empty landscapes. Lastly, the trailer ends by revealing the release timeframe for 2026. It also depicts the platforms on which the game will debut.
