Crytek recently announced a complete overhaul of their blockbuster open-world first shooter game, Hunt Showdown. As one of the most played games on Steam, every gaming enthusiast is looking forward to seeing how the new upgrade compares to the previous maps after its release in August. The upgrade is Crytek’s first step away from Louisiana swamps into the Colorado mountains. Let’s set to find out which one is stronger between Hunt Showdown compares vs Hunt Showdown 1896. 

What is Hunt Showdown?

Hunt Showdown is a 2018 first-person shooter game developed by Crytek. It features player-versus-player gameplay, in which you try to survive against other players looking to destroy you. 

Set in the swamps of Louisiana, you’ll play a bounty killer on a mission to kill mythical monsters and receive bounties. You’ll be in a dark and dangerous world where zombie-like humans are trying to devour you. You must kill five monsters to receive the bounties and reach the extraction point. 

The game has three sections. First, you play in the tracking phase to try to locate the boss. Then, you proceed to the second phase, where you expel the boss to hell. The third phase involves escaping and surviving to reach the extraction point. 

What is Hunt Showdown 1896?

Scheduled to launch on 15th August 2024, Hunt Showdown 1896 is the map that will mark the next new chapter of Hunt Showdown. Crytek named it Mammon’s Gulch. The update features a completely redesigned UI and an engine upgraded to CryEngine 5.11, so players should expect massive upgrades in visuals, audio, and performance. Its director noted that Mammon’s Gulch is completely different from previous maps. It’s the most polished map they’ve ever shipped in three years.  This upgrade welcomes you to a whole new era of Hunt in the rocky mountains of Colorado. 

Story 

Hunt Showdown is set in 1895. It’s an era characterized by supernatural events of different severities and impacts. The Louisiana Event is one of the most widespread and powerful events of this era. Unlike the others, the Louisiana Event involves multiple supernatural beings over its duration. As a result, several secret organizations emerge to combat these events. One such group is the American Hunter Association, which tries to keep its existence oblivious. After some time, AHA splits into different groups called pacts. These pacts fight against each other in the Bayou because each has its own perspective on the Louisiana Event. 

Players take on the role of Hunters in this event to combat the supernatural beings that ordinary people describe as ghosts or demons. As the Hunter, you must take an inoculation serum to help you resist the influence of The Sculptor, which is one of the most powerful entities during the Louisiana Event. The game tells its story through manuscripts, letters, and documents. These sources tell tales about events happening in the Bayou. However, some of them are inaccurate and untrustworthy. Several unreliable narratives, including The Book of Weapons and The Book of Monsters, offer different accounts of the corruption and Hunters’ attempt to combat the corruption during the 1895 Louisiana Event. A modern-day researcher combined these documents. The Book of Monsters contains information on every monster you’ll encounter in this game. So, you must kill the monsters multiple times to gather knowledge.  On the other hand, The Book of Weapons contains historical information about weapons in Hunt Showdown. 

Gameplay 

Hunt Showdown has five game modes: Bounty Hunt, Trials, Training Mode, Soul Survivor, and the Shooting Range. Up to 12 players can play in both the Bounty Hunt and Soul Survivor missions. However, the Trials and Training modes are only PvE and do not offer co-op gameplay. Finally, the Shooting Range accommodates up to 3 players as solos or as a team. 

In Hunt Showdown 1896, you’ll be in a new era of Hunt, which takes you to a whole new Colorado biome, as stated earlier. Combining PvP and PvE elements, this extraction shooter game challenges you to thrive against a backdrop of supernatural horror in a dark and gritty world. If you are the kind of player who is always looking for new challenges, You’ll have frequent updates to play around with. 

It’s set between two mountain regions, with the only thing separating them being dark, winding, and precarious train tracks. Unlike the previous maps, Mammon’s Gulch allows you to look over compounds for enemies from above. It’s designed to offer players tactical vantage points. 

Platforms 

Crytek launched Hunt Showdown on Steam on 22 February 2018. The company later released it for Xbox Game Preview on May 29, 2019 with a full Microsoft Windows release on August 27, 2019. Hunt Showdown also launched on Xbox One on September 19, 2019 and on PlayStation 4 on February 18, 2020.

Hunt Showdown 1896 launches on August 15, 2024 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Crytek announced that console players will get an upgrade free of charge. Even better, all the progress and purchases will continue to the current consoles. 

Verdict 

With Hunt Showdown 1896, you are based in a Colorado-themed location. It follows the same story as Hunt Showdown. However, unlike in the previous Hunt Showdown maps, Mammon’s Gulch is set in a Colorado-themed location. The kilometer-wide map welcomes you to delve into mines as you pass through torched towns, trying to avoid threats. You can fight alone or with friends against other Hunters or timeless evil. Just like in the previous games, you’ll be risking everything as Hunt consumes you.

Hunt Showdown 1896 is not a sequel but rather an upgrade. The map advances to CryEngine 5, which means players will enjoy enhanced visuals, audio, and animations. The upgrade has been designed with the community’s feedback in mind. It has the best elements from the previous maps, and according to its director, it’s the most polished map they’ve ever shipped.
