Hello Neighbor 3: Everything We Know

Hello Neighbor 2 is still rough around the edges. This series has so much potential from the overly successful Hello Neighbor. The jokes, the horror, the stealth, every part of the gameplay was just so creatively put together. Then the sequel came, and well, it left us with mixed emotions, hoping that the developers could somehow redeem themselves in patch updates.

While the answer from the devs isn’t finishing the sequel or releasing a patch fix, it seems they’ve decided to work on Hello Neighbor 3 instead. The developers seem to have a specific direction in which they want to take the series, and launching a third title seems to be the next step. So, before we get ourselves up in arms, let’s take a look at everything we know about Hello Neighbor 3 below.

What is Hello Neighbor 3?

Hello Neighbor 3 is an upcoming adventure game that aims to find the perfect balance between cozy and horror. It’ll be the third title in the Hello Neighbor series. According to Steam, you can expect to make different decisions that take you on alternate paths. However, every path you take will be the “right” one. All the while, you’ll be breaking into houses and performing all sorts of actions that lead to making exciting discoveries.

The upcoming game will be set in Raven Brooks, where you’ll explore the town and the neighboring houses. The town has been abandoned by half of its population, leaving the remaining residents with the power to manipulate the town’s fate. Also, your actions will be simulated and will occur in real-time.

Story

Hello Neighbor 3 takes place in a half-abandoned town called Raven Brooks. Your protagonist, however, is a new arrival in the town. You find citizens who have built relationships with one another. They are driven by varying desires and ideas. Onward, you’ll begin to perform various actions that will influence the events in the town. In time, your influence will dramatically shift the fate of Raven Brooks.

Thanks to Steam, we can look forward to the following key features in the final game.

  • Simulation: Hello Neighbor 3 is a sandbox adventure, meaning you have the freedom to walk around and explore the world however you like. The environments and actions you take will be simulated in real time. Moreover, you’ll meet different citizens who all behave uniquely based on their lives and personalities.
  • Decision-making: Apparently, every decision you make will be the “right” one. However, the game will use a system where your choices will really branch out into complex objectives and ways to fulfill them.
  • Cozy and horror adventure: You’ll explore a cozy but eerie half-abandoned town in early spring. Despite its scarce population, memories abound here.

Development

Nikita Kolesnikov, in partnership with tinyBuild, is currently working on Hello Neighbor 3. He’s the creator of the series. However, Nikita will be working with a small team of developers on the new game while also adhering to the development approach of the first game.

The first game was a blast, and lots of gamers really enjoyed playing it. However, Hello Neighbor 2 fell flat on its face. It does have potential; it just suffered from too many problems, from broken promises to poor execution. As a result, it made more sense to iron out the issues in the sequel. Instead, we’re getting a new game. Hopefully, the developers can learn from their mistakes and create a complete and worthwhile product.

Hello Neighbor 3 - Devlog 1

Hello Neighbor 3 has no trailer out yet. However, we do have the first Devlog out on YouTube. This served as the official announcement that the third title in the series is in development. In the video, Nikita Kolesnikov walks us through the ideation and prototyping phase for the upcoming game. He reveals how he initially wanted to develop a competitive online multiplayer game before tossing the idea out for a cooperative option.

In the competitive play, the idea was to invade other players’ houses, steal their stuff and use them to reinforce your own. While an interesting idea, the devs shifted to cooperative, where your team works against AI. AI isn’t a new concept in the series, with the neighbor in the sequel controlled by one. However, the implementation wasn’t all too great.

Finally, the devs landed on the idea that you find yourself in Raven Brooks, a town nearly desolate. Suddenly, strange events begin to happen that you can choose to become involved with or not. Meanwhile, the characters in the game also adapt to your choices. There will be future devlogs, which dive deeper into the development progress, as well as the upcoming game’s environment and atmosphere. Right now, the devs are in the prototyping stage, so there is likely still a long way to go.
