Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic is officially confirmed to launch sometime in 2025. It’s the upcoming game in the Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNaF) franchise, which is an indie survival horror video game series that has spun 21 games. The series has become so popular over the years thanks to its deceptively spooky narrative twists. Meanwhile, highly intense encounters and clever writing elevate it to among the most worthwhile franchises to check out. But the games are also mystery-solving adventures that engage you from start to finish.

What is Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach?

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach is the ninth and latest mainline installment in the survival horror FNaF franchise. It was released on December 16, 2021, to mostly positive reviews. Security Breach launched on multiple platforms, including PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Google Stadia, and GeForce Now. 

Security Breach follows the story of a young boy named Gregory who is trapped in a huge shopping mall. But this isn’t any ordinary shopping mall, as deadly animatronics come alive to haunt him. A mysterious woman called Vanny controls the fearsome beasts. Meanwhile, the security guard Vanessa is also hot on Gregory’s tail. In a neat twist, Freddy Fazbear, the usual primary antagonist of the series, is immune to Vanny’s control and helps Gregory escape the mall.

What is Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic?

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic, on the other hand, is an upcoming 11th mainline installment in the survival horror FNaF franchise. It was first unveiled on August 6, 2024, and will be ready for launch sometime in 2025. The launch of Secret of the Mimic will celebrate FNaF’s 10th anniversary. You can also check out the game’s creepy teaser trailer video on YouTube. While the trailer doesn’t reveal the platforms the game will launch on, it’s likely the new game will come to all major platforms that previous games have been released on. 

Meanwhile, developer Steel Wool Games has developed four mainline FNaF games so far, including Security Breach. The same developer will be picking up where they left off with the upcoming Secret of the Mimic. As for the story, the antagonist, “The Mimic,” will likely play a significant role in the new game. The Mimic is a sophisticated skeleton that can mimic your voice and behavior. You’ll probably remember his character as the primary antagonist of Security Breach’s Ruin DLC.

Story

At present, Security Breach is the biggest game in the FNaF franchise. It features a free-roam style of gameplay, so you can explore the environment at your own pace. The shopping mall featured in the game is vast, featuring different areas from sewers to bowling areas and golf courses. In that sense, you spend plenty of your playthrough discovering hidden secrets. All the while, you’ll be evading deadly animatronics. You may have to hide from them or distract them with paint cans and toys.

The key characters in Security Breach are Gregory, the primary protagonist, and Vanessa, the main antagonist. You’ll meet many more characters, including the animatronics that are the main enemies you’ll face. But also, Vanny and Freddy tie the whole narrative together with a bow. Overall, the story is funny and scary, too. You do have moments of genuine fright, but you also see jump scares coming from a mile away. 

If anything, the bugs were the main source of frustration, rather than the story or gameplay. However, the developer has also been steadfast in releasing patch updates. As a result, the story bathes in a genuinely fun, family-friendly experience.  

Secret of the Mimic, on the other hand, is likely to shine its spotlight on The Mimic. Having a primary antagonist who mimics your voice and behavior has the potential for some truly spooky encounters. And by the game’s title, “Secret of the Mimic,” we’ll likely be uncovering a dark secret that sends us down a frightening rabbit hole. Unfortunately, speculation is all we have, as the official details on the story of Secret of the Mimic remain under wraps for now. We do have a creepy teaser trailer, but it only showcases a music box alongside some bone-chilling background music.

Gameplay

Security Breach’s gameplay involves controlling Gregory as he strives to survive the abominations running amok in the shopping mall. Players can freely roam around in the shopping mall, with no restriction tying them to a specific area. You can also discover hidden secrets as you explore while also engaging with some minigames. On paper, it all sounds interesting. However, Security Breach dropped the ball on implementation. The game simply had too many glitches and bugs, not to mention the endings were bland, and the performance was shaky. Many of these issues have been ironed out through patch updates. Now, all eyes are on the Secret of the Mimic. We don’t have information on the gameplay yet, but Steel Wool has a lot of work cut out for them to deliver wholesome content.

Verdict

It’s too early to say whether Secret of the Mimic will be better than Security Breach. The upcoming game will likely focus on The Mimic as the primary antagonist. Beyond that, we hope for a high-performing game with fluid gameplay and engaging content. The FNaF franchise has always been able to induce genuine panic in fans, all in good fun, of course. Hopefully, Secret of the Mimic nails the fear-inducing aspect of the story and gameplay enough to warrant many more iterations to come.
