Looks like we’re going to have to slam the breaks on Asphalt 10: Legends. Developer Gameloft’s upcoming game in the Asphalt series is Asphalt Legends Unite. It’s, as you have probably guessed, not a sequel, but rather the first-ever expansion to the latest 2018 game, Asphalt 9: Legends. More than that, Gameloft plans to make the upcoming Asphalt Legends Unite more than an expansion. They plan to make it a much-needed evolution of the Asphalt series. So, shall we see what’s in store? Is Asphalt Legends Unite going to be better than Asphalt 9: Legends? Let’s find out in our Asphalt 9: Legends versus Asphalt Legends Unite article down below.

What is Asphalt 9: Legends?

Asphalt 9: Legends is an arcade racing game released on February 26, 2018 by Gameloft. It’s the 15th mainline game in the Asphalt series. Asphalt 9: Legends tasks you with collecting, customizing, and upgrading prestigious cars. You then race against online competitors in stunning real-life locations and thrilling street racing action.

What is Asphalt Legends Unite?

Asphalt Legends Unite is an upcoming arcade racing expansion to Asphalt 9: Legends. It’s scheduled to launch on July 17, 2024. While Asphalt Legends Unite isn’t a new game, it plans to represent an evolution of the Asphalt series. In essence, Asphalt Legends Unite will be like a re-launch of the existing Asphalt 9: Legends, bringing forth a wealth of new and exciting features.

Story

In Asphalt 9: Legends, you control fearless drivers and compete in street racing action to become the next “Asphalt Legend.” You have more than 50 prestigious racing cars to collect, customize, and upgrade. These represent real-life cars from your favorite manufacturers, including Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari, and more. Further, you’ll burn rubber on stunning real-world locations, from the Himalayas to Rome to the Caribbean, and many more.

You can particularly dive into the Drive Syndicate event type for a structured story mode. Unlike other event types, Drive Syndicate has missions and sub-missions to complete and earn Syndicate points, which you use to get rewards, packs, parts, blueprints, and upgrades to level up your racing game.

On the other hand, Asphalt Legends Unite is a continuation of Asphalt 9: Legends. It means you’ll be able to use all the cars you’ve collected and upgraded in Asphalt 9: Legends in the new expansion. As such, you’ll be continuing to build your legacy on the road to becoming an Asphalt Legend. At its core, the story remains the same: pick out your dream car and compete in stunning real-life locations worldwide.

Gameplay

Besides Drive Syndicate, Asphalt 9: Legends has Money Run, Hacker Run, and On the Run game modes. Money Run requires that you cross the finish line having earned a certain number of Syndicate Coins. The coins decrease when you damage your vehicle, whether by ramming into others or crashing into walls. However, you can increase your coins by performing slick combo knockdowns and using shockwaves. Meanwhile, Hacker Run sets a timer for races, while On the Run challenges you to cross the finish line without getting busted.

While Asphalt Legends Unite retains all of the game modes in Asphalt 9: Legends, it plans to add new features, too. The expansion will launch a new co-op game mode, where you’ll compete against each other in two teams. The first team, made up of five players, will play the role of law enforcement, while the other, made up of three drivers, will be the Syndicate Drivers attempting to escape. Teamwork will come in handy, whether in chasing down culprits or making the most daring escape. Some strategy, too, will surely factor in.

In fact, Asphalt Legends Unite is said to be the new title that will replace Asphalt 9: Legends. It’ll be a complete overhaul of the latest game, proposing a wealth of exciting features and improvements we have long been hoping for.

Graphics

Furthermore, Asphalt Legends Unite plans to launch an improved graphics engine, a better UI system, and a redesigned garage, among many other things. You’ll enjoy an upgraded game engine, which will allow for quality-of-life additions to gameplay like dynamic lighting. Indeed, dynamic lighting could be a game changer for the Asphalt franchise. It’ll allow for features like surface reflections and real-time headlights, which add an extra layer of immersiveness to your playthrough. Meanwhile, the redesigned garage will boast over 250 unlockable prestigious cars and new car reveal graphics.

Cross-Progression and Cross-Platform

Moreover, the garage will allow for cross-progression, enabling you to carry your progress over from Asphalt 9: Legends into Asphalt Legends Unite. With crossplay also coming to the Asphalt series for the first time, you can rest assured that the stakes will be higher. You’ll be able to compete against players on consoles, PC, and Mac. The new place to be will be Asphalt Legends Unite, doubtlessly offering so much more to look forward to.

Verdict

Despite Asphalt Unite Legends serving as the expansion to the current Asphalt 9: Legends, it’s clear it’ll offer so much more than you’d typically get from an expansion. For starters, you’ll enjoy an entirely new co-op mode, battling in two teams, cops versus robbers style. Furthermore, we expect better graphics and UI, as well as a redesigned garage, so you’ll be free to carry over your current progress to the new game.

What’s not to like? So far, every update we have about Asphalt Legends Unite points toward a better entry. The expansion, in addition to including what is currently on offer, will add a ton of more gameplay. Of course, only upon launch day on July 17, 2024, will our minds be truly at ease on whether Asphalt Legends Unite outperforms Asphalt 9: Legends. For now, though, the mobile racing experience seems to be shaping up to offer more thrilling Asphalt street racing action.
