Starlight Legacy – Everything We Know
Video game technology has come a long way since the Super Nintendo era. However, many players are nostalgic about the charming, simplistic design of the games from way back then. To this end, many players were delighted to learn about the launch of Starlight Legacy, a JRPG game that looks and feels like a game from the early 90s. It came as a surprise, with the official announcement and trailer coming out just a few days the game launched.
The game is already causing a buzz because of its perfect execution, and many players are eager to learn what the buzz is all about. Here is everything we know about Starlight Legacy.
What is Starlight Legacy?

Starlight Legacy is a story-rich, 2D RPG that is reminiscent of games from the Super Nintendo era. Everything about the game is inspired by 90s-era gaming, including the gameplay, visuals, and audio. Most notably, the visuals employ 2D pixel art, while the battles employ a turn-based RPG combat system. The retro theme is so well executed that players would be forgiven for mistaking this game for a long-forgotten game from back then. However, the game also takes full advantage of the modern gaming platforms to deliver a smooth, flawless gameplay experience.
Story

Starlight Legacy is a story-rich game. At the heart of the story is the Evaria Kingdom. The kingdom is a magical world with a magical tree that nourishes and purifies all natural elements, including the soil, water, and air. The abundance of resources has so far enabled the kingdom’s four provinces to co-exist in peace and harmony.
However, two things happen that threaten to plunge the kingdom into chaos. First, the king places a ban on the teaching of magic. Second, an unknown faction attacks and damages the magical Eternity Tree. The tree withers, kickstarting the world’s corruption and degradation.
On an unrelated note, two warriors go on a mission to retrieve an important sword for the king, shortly before the Eternity Tree gets attacked. As such, their mission changes, and they must find powerful relics to restore the tree. Their mission brings them across all sorts of monsters that they must fight and vanquish to progress.
Gameplay

Adventure is an integral aspect of the gameplay in Starlight Legacy. The goal is to find and collect relics that the king can use to restore the withering Eternity Tree. The relics are hidden across the open world, encouraging players to explore every inch of it.
A non-linear exploration system lets the players move in any order. The world is vast and features diverse environments, including lush forests, dungeons, towns, and more. Players can easily travel between the different environments without load times. Besides walking, players can also get around faster by flying in 3D flight sequences. Interestingly, while the game’s world features 2D, 90s-style graphics, the overworld is in 3D.
Players come across many monsters as they explore the four provinces for hidden relics, setting the stage for exciting action. Enemies come in different shapes and sizes. Moreover, they have varying abilities and fighting tactics. For example, some breath fire, while others shoot projectiles. As such, every battle is strategic and unique, and players must learn and adapt as they go.
The game employs a turn-based RPG combat system, just like similar games from the Super Nintendo era. Players can monitor their characters’ and enemies’ health and other stats at the bottom of the screen. Interestingly, the enemies and bosses are scaled based on players’ progress, considering the non-linear exploration system.
Players’ characters have varying weapons, skills, and abilities that suit different situations. Moreover, the RPG system enables players to expand and upgrade their characters’ weapons, skills, and equipment. Every upgrade makes the characters better fighters and explorers by boosting aspects such as strength and speed. Players can access upgrades by visiting certain stores as they explore the four provinces.
The game’s thrilling story unfolds as players explore the kingdom and fight enemies. Like the exploration system, the story is non-linear and versatile. Players can also interact with certain NPCs, and the conversations can be interesting. Characters communicate via a text-based dialogue system, and players can piece the story together from every interaction. The dialogue system supports various languages, including English, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French, Dutch, German, and Portuguese.
Development

Starlight Legacy is developed by Decafesoft and published by Eastasiasoft Limited. Decafesoft has one other game under its belt, MugenCards which is a card game, while Eastasiasoft Limited has dozens of released and upcoming games. One of the most impressive aspects of the game is that it is the work of one developer: Justin Matsuzawa. The developer works via a solo development approach, handling all aspects of the game’s design, programming, and art.
Trailer
The official trailer for Starlight Legacy came out about two weeks before the game launched. It is an excellent representation of the game’s biggest features and gameplay mechanics. Everything looks charming, and the up-beat music helps immerse players in the experience.
Many of the scenes showcase the turn-based combat system. The enemies appear to come in various forms and sizes, ranging from the ordinary to the bizarre. Moreover, their abilities and attack tactics vary, as do the heroes’ skills and abilities.
Many of the scenes also showcase the game’s world, including the 2D view from the ground and the 3D aerial view. The world looks vast and features diverse environments, ranging from lush forests to barren deserts and majestic castles.
Some of the closing scenes also highlight the game’s RPG system. They show lists of many weapons and tools that players can equip and upgrade. It is also worth noting the on-screen text and dialogue system, from which players can piece the story together.
