Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi — Everything We Know

Two years ago, we caught wind of the development of Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi through the teaser trailer released on YouTube. Now, we have yet more news on the development progress, revealing the platforms we can expect the mobile RPG to launch on.

If the title sounds familiar, it’s probably because you might have watched/read the anime and manga it’s based on. And now, fans will have the opportunity to control the characters in a gaming format, potentially facing the seven colossi, which are unique and powerful, almost unbeatable beasts.

Strap on while we explore everything that we know so far about the upcoming Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi below.

What is Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi?

Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi is an upcoming mobile RPG. It’s an anime adaptation based on the Shangri-La Frontier anime and manga. If you haven’t heard of it, the anime currently has two seasons, following the adventures of Rakurō Hizutome and his desire to play “bad games.” His latest interest is the new VR game, Shangri-La Frontier.

Meanwhile, the manga pretty much follows the same thread of the high school student, Rakurō Hizutom, adopting the gaming moniker, Sunraku, and being particularly fond of playing “poorly made games,” including the popular VR game, Shangri-La Frontier.

Both the anime and manga series have been well-received, citing great characters, fun fights, and overall an easy-to-follow story. So, for fans who’ve been dutifully following the anime and manga, you’ll be happy to know that a mobile RPG is coming your way. We expect the game adaptation to follow the story, character, and fight format. Nothing with complex mysteries; rather, something to unwind after a long day.

Story

Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi — Everything We Know

As developer Netmarble Nexus has confirmed, the story will adopt the characters and themes of the anime and manga. In fact, the original cast from the anime will be reprising their roles in Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi. For one, Yuma Uchida will be playing the role of the protagonist, Sunraku, while Rina Hidaka will be playing Emul. There are more exciting characters to look forward to, a few of which have been showcased in the trailer.

Above all, it appears that the upcoming game will be aiming to remain as authentically possible to the source material, faithfully adopting the narrative and key fights.

From the trailer description, we can anticipate the story structure the game will follow. Any video game that uses a display is known as a “retro game” in Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi’s world. And the protagonist has played through them all. When he hears of a new game, though, called “Shangri-La Frontier” using the latest VR technology, he can’t wait to beat it. However, there are 30 million players going up against him, alongside an unnamed “nemesis” who can affect the fate of all the players.

Gameplay

The upcoming Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi is a full-scale mobile role-playing game. The visuals and environments will use 3D graphics to portray the colossal battles, possibly against the Seven Colossi beasts. You can think of the game as an adventure, retelling the story and themes of the anime and manga it’s based on. Rather than read or watch the story and fights, you’ll be playing them in a game format on your mobile device.

We can confirm that you’ll be free to switch between two playable characters mid-battle. This will potentially allow for more varied fighting styles, alongside a greater variety of weapons and abilities. Alternatively, you can recruit a buddy to play with you in two-player mode.

Centering more on the boss fights, I presume they’ll be the Seven Colossi. Described as “powerful and gigantic beasts,” these fights may very well be huge spectacle moments during your playthrough. They’ll likely be key points of progression, featuring jaw-dropping cinematics and testing your timing and precision. From the trailer, you’ll be using flashy attacks to take down enemies, with details on the specifics still under wraps.

There’ll likely be exploration of diverse biomes as well, in addition to story progression. In any case, we’ll be keeping an eye out for any new reveals.

Development

Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi isn’t anything fresh out of the box. It’s an anime and manga adaptation, quite popular among its fans. In fact, the original manga has sold over 13 million copies worldwide, prompting the production of the 23rd volume and the 3rd season. So, it makes sense that developer and publisher Netmarble will want to launch a video game adaptation, though sadly, they are only developing it for smartphones.

As Netmarble brings Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi to its final stages, you can lean on their promise for “dynamic characters, splendid skill performance, and action.”

Trailer

So far, we have two trailer videos released within the span of two years. Evidently, the game is still in development. However, we can at least catch glimpses of the mechanics and graphics to expect in the final game. Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi will use stylized graphics to render its 3D world. You can spot some of the colossal beasts you’ll be fighting in the trailers.

Moreover, you can spot the rich environmental detail the game will incorporate, bursting with color and spice. This is the typical art style and design we expect from an anime adaptation. However, the animations are definitely impressive, possibly highlighting a high-quality mobile RPG.
