Meanwhile, Five Nights at Freddy’s follows the night security guard Mike Schmidt on a shift at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, and thereafter, surviving a stream of haunted animatronics. 

Gameplay

The biggest differences, though, lie in the gameplay between My Friendly Neighborhood and Five Nights at Freddy’s. The former is a more modern survival horror, where the malicious puppets may induce fear when you run into them due to their frightening designs. However, the game combines their menacing appearances with an unsettling environment and bone-chilling atmosphere. 

My Friendly Neighborhood is more atmospheric than Five Nights at Freddy’s, using psychological influence to deliver its most frightening moments. You’ll find the environments have a sense of dread, accompanied by chilling visual and audio cues. Meanwhile, FNaF relies more on jump scares. You explore a cartoonish world that appears harmless. However, out of the blue, a perilous animatronic leaps out of the shadows, and the chase begins, often relying on quick timing and reactions in an often claustrophobic place. 

Notably, My Friendly Neighborhood has more tricks up its sleeve. It gives you puzzles to solve, and more combat-oriented action sequences. Both games incorporate elements of resource management. You might manage limited sources of light in FNaF, while dealing with scarcity in My Friendly Neighborhood. 

However, there are notable differences, particularly in the use of jump scares, puzzles, and combat. Over time, using jump scares as a means of scaring the player has grown more predictable, perhaps even bland. Developers have to be truly creative to frighten you. Fortunately, FNaF nails a good chunk of its jump scares. Coupled with the story’s twists and turns, you’re often genuinely taken by surprise at some of the animatronics’ encounters. 

My Friendly Neighborhood, however, has taken a different turn. It has placed a heavy focus on both designing menacing puppets and crafting puzzles and combat to boot.
