Midnight Murder Club: Everything We Know

Avatar photo

Imagine playing hide and seek, except you’re hunting down your friends to kill them before they kill you. That’s the gist of Midnight Murder Club, at least as far as the trailer portrays. We’ve had some detailed information on the anticipated gameplay thanks to an ongoing crossplay demo. But even then, some information may still be unclear. So, let’s break down everything we know about Midnight Murder Club, leaving no stone unturned.

What is Midnight Murder Club?

Midnight Murder Club: Everything We Know

Midnight Murder Club is an upcoming first-person multiplayer shooter game. It uniquely blends the first-person shooter and party game genre. There are also some horror elements to devour, alongside gory art styles and spooky vibes. In the “midnight murder club,” the agenda is one: kill everyone you see or die trying.

Of course, killing everyone doesn’t come easily, and with the abandoned house, you’ll be trapped in pitch dark. All you have is a flashlight that can easily give away your position. Still, the Dual Sense controller makes it so you actually feel like you’re in the mansion, with immersive haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Proximity chat and your mic, too, should help ease communication.

Overall, if you have a group of friends and are looking to have some fun setting traps and shooting off each other’s heads, Midnight Murder Club is for you.

Story

Midnight Murder Club’s story is very simple. It’s an invitation to join the club of an elite group of six players who hunt one another in an abandoned mansion. All you have is a gun and flashlight. The rest is up to you to figure a way through the pitch-dark hallways of a spooky mansion and, at whatever cost, avoid getting killed. Each player will wear a mask before proceeding into a gaming session of extreme alertness and speedy response time. You need quick reflexes to shoot before you’re shot, even as the darkness enshrouds your every step and the gunfire rages on across several rooms in the house.

Gameplay

Through perceiving where your friends may be hiding, you’ll seek them out. You can employ all sorts of ways to compel them to leave their hiding places. Yes, even deceptive tricks will be at your disposal. From setting traps to taunting opponents, Midnight Murder Club will let you deceive and sharpshoot your way through the game in every way possible.

As you can imagine, your decisions will play a key role in your survival. When you hear gunfire in the next room, you could choose to go check it out or hide. If you lose your bearing, you could choose to flip on your flashlight, but that may expose your position.

Look forward to a tense yet funny multiplayer first-person shooting experience. All gameplay will take place inside an abandoned mansion with detailed rooms packed with all kinds of traps and surprises. Although your only tools will be a flashlight and pistol, you can take advantage of your surroundings to move stealthily and lure opponents into corners they can’t escape. The smarter and quieter you take out opponents, the better.

But the stakes can be higher when you’re forced to switch on your flashlight. In that case, you can use traps and other special items in the mansion to survive till morning. Some more specifics you can expect from the gameplay:

Key Features

  • Over 30 elaborately decorated rooms to explore in Wormwood Manor.
  • Positional audio combined with proximity chat to keep track of friends—apparently, these will be so good you can hear other players chat from across the halls as well as gunfire that you can stealthily follow to expose a rival’s position.
  • DualSense controller haptic feedback and adaptive triggers for further immersion—you’ll feel your hands as they run along the walls, bump into items, feel the tension as you struggle to open a door, the weight of the trigger as you release, and more.
  • Vending machines packed with extra “devilish toys” like night vision pills, inflatable mannequins, and machine guns.

Development

Midnight Murder Club: Everything We Know

Midnight Murder Club is the product of Velan Studios, whom you may know from their work in Knockout City, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, and Hot Wheels: Rift Rally. The studio announced the game at The Game Awards pre-show. Also, it seems they have found a new partner, Sony Interactive Entertainment, to publish the game.

Midnight Murder Club Announce Trailer

The trailer opens with the Velan Studios logo before diving straight into the action. You find yourself in a pitch-black room, clutching a flashlight in your right hand and a pistol in your left. Distant gunshots echo from the next room, prompting you to switch off the flashlight. When you turn it back on, the tension peaks. A figure in a leather deer mask stands behind you and kills you instantly. Grim.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

Midnight Murder Club will be coming to PlayStation 5 and PC platforms via Steam in February 2025. Originally, the game was meant to be a PC exclusive. However, the developers will now be porting the game over to PS5 as well. There has been a rising demand for the game to make it to virtual reality, too. However, that decision remains in the developer’s hands. Please note that February 2025 won’t be the final launch but rather an Early Access release to iron out the last remaining rough edges.

If you’re curious about how the game looks and feels, you can always check out the crossplay demo, which is still ongoing through December 22, 2024. The crossplay demo was among the top ten most-played games at the Steam Next Fest, with the reviews so far extremely positive. Do note, though, that the crossplay demo is currently incomplete. It has two game modes so far:

  • Free-for-All: Has six players per gaming session, the winner being the player with the highest kills.
  • Thief in the Night: Three two-person teams explore the mansion for loot, more rightly, skulls that you haul into a vault. The game ends when the last vault is closed, and the team that has garnered the most money wins.

When you play the crossplay demo, be sure to leave feedback for the developers. On the editions front, we don’t know of any that will be available for preorder at this time. However, you can keep track of any pending information, updates, or announcements via the official social handle here.
