Metro Exodus vs. Metro Awakening

The Metro Games franchise has been around for nearly a decade and a half now. The series is known among fans for its pretty immersive survival-horror gaming experiences. From the original entry Metro 2033 to the 2019 classic Metro Exodus. There are a lot of experiences to recount about the post-apocalyptic Moscow Metro. Despite the titles having different developers, they always provide a connection in their plots, always providing players with an easy way to follow their events. However, in their latest title, the franchise goes back in time to portray the events before the original game. It’s an upcoming title dubbed Metro Awakening. However, it’s important to note that its gameplay comes pretty close to what we see in Metro Exodus. Here’s a quick Metro Exodus vs. Metro Awakening comparison.

What is Metro Exodus?

Metro Awakening is a highly anticipated video game from Vertigo Games, set to join the first-person shooter games arena in November 2024. The entry is a spin-off of the Metro games series, which started in 2010 with Metro 2033. Unlike Metro Exodus, the upcoming title features Vertigo Games as the developer and publisher, but in partnership with Deep Silver.

Story

Metro Exodus vs. Metro Awakening

The story of Metro Exodus follows on from Metro Last Light’s ending, the Redemption. It is one year after the events of the sequel of the post-apocalyptic after the nuclear war-ravaged Earth. The nuclear war’s radiation effects still affect most parts of the world, making them inhabitable. Survivors must assemble in communities, which may in turn result in different factions coming up. There are peaceful and hostile groups, and they keep fighting against each other. They also occasionally encounter hostile mutant creatures that roam the apocalyptic and the underworld.

Playing as Artyom, you resolve to leave the Moscow Metro to go to the Far East. Along with your comrades and the Aurora, venture on an epic journey to find a new and better life.

For Metro Awakening, the story goes back in time before the first game in the series, Metro 2033. However, Earth is still in the same setting as with Metro Exodus. The VR title occurs in post-apocalyptic 2028, following the nuclear armageddon that left the world in ruins. The story also deviates from Metro Exodus’ Artyom to Doctor Serdar as he braves through the apocalypse and its scotching radiation.

Gameplay

FPS comparison

Both Metro Exodus and Awakening are first-person shooter video games set in the Moscow Metro universe. In Metro Exodus, gamers play Artyom, the main protagonist, who wants to leave the devastated lands in search of a better life. You will lead a team of Spartan Rangers who join your quest. Embark on an interesting journey off the Metro and venture across a ravaged Russia.

You are up on a story-driven adventure that features stealth, brutal combat, and survival horror gameplay elements. The playthrough unfolds in non-linear levels, following a story stretching for a year as you explore aboard a steam locomotive. Use binoculars and gas masks through the acutely irradiated regions, and collect items to help you through the quests.

With Metro Awakening, you take the role of Dr Serdar, who braves the Moscow Metro tunnels to find his wife, who desperately needs medication. Master courage and boldly walk through the scary line between life and death. Awaken the brave human in you as you explore the real world and the creepy spirit world. It’s the first game in the Metro series to give players a VR gaming experience.

Grab your arsenal of hand-crafted weapons, wear your mask, and delve into the depths of the Metro universe, where mutant creatures, bandits, and even worse haunt every step you take. It only gets more chilling as your torchlight runs low, flickers and dies away in the middle of hair-raising darkness.

Game Modes

In Metro Exodus, players dive into the first-person shooter experience in an epic story-driven mode. The post-apocalyptic game progresses in non-linear levels, although the game environments and seasons change as you move along the story. All along, you control the main protagonist, Artyom, in a single-player mode.

With Metro Awakening, the game mode is no different. You control Doctor Serdar in a first-person shooter story-driven adventure. He is also the only playable character, and the game only supports single-player gameplay.

Graphics

Metro Exodus vs. Metro Awakening

Metro Awakening does a great job with the graphics compared to what 4A Games have on Metro Exodus. This perhaps explains one of the reasons why the game developers provided an enhanced edition that included more platforms. Metro Awakening features pretty cool graphics, judging from the trailer. Everything looks clear in different game environments, seasons, and times of the day.

Platforms

Release information comparison

The original Metro Exodus game debuted in February 2019 and was available for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game had a positive reception, but the developers introduced an update slightly after two years. Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition was then released for Windows, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in May 2021.

Metro Exodus vs. Metro Awakening Verdict

Monster attacking player

As a VR game, Metro Awakening is bound to have impressive graphics that would not be fairly comparable to a 2019 title. However, that doesn’t rule out Metro Exodus as a great game. In fact, based on the story in Metro Awakening, it’s only fair to say Metro Exodus offers a more immersive experience compared to the upcoming title. The main protagonist here has military combat abilities and commands a gang of Spartans, meaning combat is bound to be more engaging. Also, the game takes you through different environments, depicting a richer and more atmospheric game world.
