Interviews
Matthew Walsh, Senior Producer at gamigo – Interview Series

Voxel-centric MMORPG Trove has finally received its Rising Tides update, and not to mention a fresh-out-of-water consoles version for Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch. To learn more about the recently released Rising Tides and Gear Up! Date expansions, I recently caught up with gamigo senior producer, Matthew Walsh.
Thanks for speaking with us! Before we open up the book on the voxel-centric MMO, please could you tell us a bit about yourself? How did it all start for you, and what sparked your enthusiasm for video games?
Matthew: Hi, I’m Matthew Walsh, a Senior Producer at gamigo. As for my enthusiasm for video games, I think it came from being introduced to them at a young age, and I really latched onto games with a sense of adventure. Might be somewhat cliché, but it was the Zelda and Final Fantasy franchises that really showed me what a game could be and how one could tell a compelling story and create worlds to explore and adventure in.
Tell us a bit about Trove. What sort of game is it, and how would you best describe its core gameplay elements?
Matthew: Trove is a Voxel Action MMORPG. In the game you explore procedurally generated worlds, defeat enemies and bosses that dwell in the various dungeons in these worlds and collect epic loot!
Trove has just received its two latest updates, Rising Tides, and Gear Up, on consoles. Could you tell us a bit more about each of these expansions and what they bring to the voxel MMORPG?
Matthew: So the Gear Up! Date (we like our Puns here) brought a new way to acquire end game equipment utilizing a new crafting area of the Hub. The Hub is the central place where all players go to visit Vendors, quest givers, and meet other players. Rising Tides brought a brand-new difficulty to the game, a brand-new World type that rotates between all the different worlds and mixes them up in fun ways and a new Delve type, which are deep dungeons players can explore and conquer. As part of the Rising Tides update, we also added Mystic tier gear to help players defeat the new foes invading the world of Trove!
Do you have any words of advice for those who’ve yet to sink their teeth into the world of Trove? Are there any do’s or don’ts that could potentially benefit newcomers, perhaps?
Matthew: Yeah, I would say to not worry too much about progressing too quickly as Trove is a game about playing the way you want to and expressing yourself. With our numerous character options, mini-games to play, and the ability to build entire worlds and your own home base, there’s lots of fun to be had outside of the regular game loop!
Of course, Trove isn’t all that far from seeing its tenth anniversary, either. Are we likely to see the arrival of any fresh material over the coming months or years to celebrate this milestone? If so, please could you tell us more about what you’re working towards?
Matthew: So we can’t share too much just yet, but we are planning to make the 10 year anniversary next year a special one! Players will need to stay tuned.
Trove cast aside for a moment, do you guys have any other projects in the works at the moment?
Matthew: Trove is priority #1!

What’s the best way to stay up to date with gamigo? Are there any social channels, streams, or upcoming live events that we should be taking note of ahead of the fourth quarter?
Matthew: To keep up with Trove, follow the game on X (Twitter), like the official Facebook page, follow the game on Instagram, and join the Discord community.
Any final words for our readers?
Matthew: Please check out our newest update on PC called Rising Tides: Release the Kraken! In this expansion of the Rising Tides update players will learn more about why their favorite characters have delved into the depths, and what monstrous creatures wait for them. Make sure to bring friends!
Thanks for your time, Matthew! See you in Trove!
