I Hate This Place: Everything We Know

“I Hate This Place,” whatever “place” you’re currently thinking of, I bet, is no worse than the world this game plans to offer. Inspired by the comic book series of the same name, I Hate This Place is on the horizon, prepared to torment you with the most horrific creatures imaginable.
We’re currently getting wind of the story and gameplay bits. The game has a cool retro vibe and a colorful aesthetic that mimics the comics. With the release date not too far away, we’ve compiled everything we know about I Hate This Place below.
What is I Hate This Place?

I Hate This Place is an upcoming isometric open-world survival horror game based on the popular comic book series of the same name. Its atmospheric, eerie vibe sends chills down the spine. Meanwhile, you’ll explore a twisted world with surprising events at every turn.
Your lead protagonist is Elena. She accidentally awakens a twisted reality that shatters everything that is normal. Now, you have to help her survive the monstrosities she comes by with the hope of restoring normalcy to her home.
“Twisted beyond comprehension” is what Steam describes the game as. And from the teaser trailer, that statement couldn’t be further from the truth. Even though the game is evidently dripping in comic book charm, its eerie atmosphere and terrifying creatures still manage to capture the bone-chilling survival horror experience it intends to deliver.
Story

I Hate This Place intends to tell the story of a living nightmare. It’ll draw inspiration from the award-winning comic book series of the same name, co-created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin. Just like the comics, you’ll be immersed in a supernatural world where nothing is as it seems.
Controlling Elena, you’ll awaken a malevolent force that turns everything upside down. The world will turn hostile, packed with hostile creatures that hunt you down. By their sheer number, they will often outmatch you. Yet, you’ll be tasked with thinking on your feet and manipulating your surroundings to your advantage.
Above all, you’ll have to survive the numerous threats the world throws at you. Whether it’s the horrific creatures you encounter or the Horned Man, who seems to be the main antagonist, you must avoid them overpowering you at all costs.
Gameplay

I Hate This Place is a single-player survival horror game. It plans to use a top-down perspective to illustrate its open-world and horrific nightmares. Some of the enemies you’ll be fighting include mutated spiders, deranged outlaws, crazy cultists, and more.
You’ll engage in tense gunfights and melee combat against enemies. From the trailer, it seems you’ll have access to a variety of weapons and tools at your disposal. While you might use strength to overpower enemies, enemies will soon become too many to beat. It’ll necessitate working smarter by using the environment to your advantage.
Another way you can outsmart the competition is to stash resources. Though scarce, you’ll be able to craft valuable tools that ease your survival in the harsh and unforgiving wilderness, at least until you can safely reach the ranch house before the day ends. Speaking of nightfall, I Hate This Place plans to use day and night cycles in an interesting way where the night unleashes more formidable enemies and threats.
A core piece of gameplay will be mystery-solving. “Every specter has a story,” says Steam, suggesting that playthroughs will require a keen eye and observant mind. With each haunting that you solve, you’ll draw closer to unearthing the true reality of the reality you’re stuck in, keeping in mind that some secrets you unearth may have been better left buried.
Development

Developer Rock Square Thunder, in partnership with publisher Broken Mirror Games, is working on I Hate This Place. Kyle Starks, the comic book series co-creator that the upcoming game will be based on, is excited about the launch of the new game.
“I love my book I Hate This Place—a labor of horror love with series co-creator and artist Artyom Topiln—so needless to say, I’m thrilled to see someone bring it to life in video game form!” he says, “I can’t wait to get my hands on this game and be trapped on the terrible ranch the book inhabits!”
Broken Mirror Games, on the other hand, is a new publishing label under the more prominent Bloober Team. The Bloober Team CEO, Piotr Babieno, revealed more about the development process, saying, “We are always looking to push the boundaries of horror in all its forms, and with this new title under Broken Mirror Games, I Hate This Place is a testament to that vision.
With its blend of survival mechanics, gripping storytelling, and a distinct visual identity, we believe I Hate This Place will immerse players in a truly unforgettable nightmare.”
Trailer
Check out the teaser trailer for I Hate This Place, which was revealed during the Future Games Show. It gives you the first glimpse at the story and gameplay for the upcoming game. Right off the bat, the visuals look stunning. The developers have maintained the colorful ‘80s comic book aesthetic.
The visuals create a fine balance of unsettling creatures and environments with a dash of camp. Even though the game’s story and gameplay portray a living nightmare, the bold colors and stylish graphics lighten the mood.
