GODBREAKERS: Everything We Know

Thunderful is back with another wild idea, and this time it’s not a quiet little puzzle game or a cozy adventure. Instead, they’re bringing GODBREAKERS, a co-op hack-and-slash that invites you and your friends into non-stop action. It’s chaotic, colorful, and looks like the kind of game where everything happens fast and loud. From the very first reveal, it feels clear this one is aiming straight for gamers who love pure intensity with their crew.

So here’s the real question — what makes GODBREAKERS stand out in a crowded field of action games? Is it the setting, the pace, or the promise of something fresh from a new studio? There’s a lot to unpack, from the backstory and gameplay to how the devs are building it. Let’s dig into everything we know so far.

What is GODBREAKERS?

A team of heroes charges at a massive boss protected by a glowing shield

GODBREAKERS is an upcoming four-player cooperative hack-and-slash action game with a roguelite twist. In simple terms, it’s a game where you and up to three friends (or solo if you’re feeling brave) team up to smash hordes of enemies and huge bosses in chaotic arenas. Think of fast-paced combat mixed with co-op teamwork, and then add a unique power-absorbing mechanic – that’s the kind of thrill GODBREAKERS is aiming for.

It isn’t just about flashy combat though. GODBREAKERS carries the DNA of a roguelite, meaning runs are designed to be repeatable and rewarding. You’ll head into surreal worlds, face tough encounters, and always walk away with something new to push you further next time. The blend of hack-and-slash intensity with roguelite structure makes it a game built for replayability, solo or in co-op.

Story

GODBREAKER run through a colorful alien landscape toward an enemy

The world of GODBREAKERS serves up a wild sci-fi apocalypse. Mankind created an AI called Monad to improve our world, but it backfired spectacularly. The AI decided humans were the problem (classic AI villain move) and wiped us out. Now this rogue intelligence is devouring entire planets in its pursuit of perfection – and it’s got its sights set on our Sun next.

Enter the players: you become “vessels of humanity” resurrected by mysterious celestial beings as a last-ditch weapon against Monad. As a Godbreaker, you’re essentially a superpowered warrior fighting through strange, surreal worlds to spark humanity’s last hope. You’ll battle robotic enemies, clash with giant bosses, and fight as if you were a mythic hero taking on a false god. So, it’s a high-stakes premise blending sci-fi and fantasy.

Gameplay

In GODBREAKERS, players take on the role of vessels of humanity who fight to stop Monad, an artificial intelligence that wiped out mankind. The gameplay centers on action that can be played solo or in four-player co-op. Battles are designed to be fast, with each player controlling a unique character that can attack, dodge, and react quickly. Fights are set across six different biomes, each featuring distinct hazards, enemies, and bosses. The variety of arenas means players will move through surreal landscapes, facing new threats in every run.

A unique mechanic lets you absorb powers from the enemies you defeat. Mid-battle, you can weaken foes, drain their energy, and turn their own strength back against them. When enough energy is charged, you can release a Godbreak – a powerful strike fueled by what you’ve taken. This adds an extra layer of strategy, because every fight can shift if you manage to grab the right ability at the right moment.

Combat also allows players to switch tactics at any moment by canceling out of actions mid-move. Attacks, dashes, and abilities can connect smoothly, giving flexibility in how each encounter is approached. You will also be able to choose from different Archetypes, each with unique weapons and traits that influence playstyle.

Development

GODBREAKERS is being developed by To The Sky, a studio founded in 2021 by industry veterans. The game marks their debut project, and they’ve drawn on years of experience to bring it to life. As CEO and Executive Producer Jugo Mirkovic explained, “As the first title for our studio, we wanted to create a game that feels fast, fluid and fun, where every moment is a chance to unleash chaos alongside your friends. We’ve poured years worth of knowledge into crafting the best gameplay experience possible in GODBREAKERS, and we’re so excited to finally share it with the world.”

On the publishing side, Thunderful Games is handling GODBREAKERS’ release. While not on the scale of giants like EA or Activision, Thunderful has earned a strong reputation for supporting unique, high-quality indie titles. Their catalog includes games such as the SteamWorld series, Planet of Lana, Viewfinder, and more. It’s a track record that shows they know how to deliver memorable experiences.
