Game of Thrones: Kingsroad - Everything We Know

Soon, you’ll become a part of the Night’s Watch that fights back the White Walkers and protects the Wall from breach. Many of the aspects of the hit TV show will remain in the upcoming game. However, we’ll be focusing on the very early scenes from Game of Thrones, playing as some of the fan-favorite characters that graced our screens: the likes of Jon Snow and the Dothraki chieftain Khal Drogo, we presume. It might still be early development phase, but we sure do know quite a ton already. Here’s everything we know about Game of Thrones: Kingsroad so far.

What is Game of Thrones: Kingsroad?

JOHN SNOW I Game of Thrones: Kingsroad - Everything We Know

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is an upcoming story-driven open-world action adventure RPG game based on the hit TV show Game of Thrones. Generally, if you’ve watched the show, which nearly everyone has, you should have a clear idea of what to expect.

Netmarble, the developer behind the game, promises to faithfully adapt the show. However, you’ll be playing an original story. So, there’s a good reason to jump back into the world of Westeros.

Story

JON SNOW

In Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, you’ll be exploring Westeros, where you’ll be following Jon Snow and his journey serving as a member of the Night’s Watch. Your quest will be to defend the Wall from the White Walkers and the giants, which will undoubtedly come with captivating story beats and combat encounters.

While exploring the world, you’ll run into exciting characters, many of them familiar from the TV show. The world will be pretty familiar as you walk around exploring iconic locations like Winterfell. Thanks to the website, we can pinpoint the brief overview of the story you can expect. King Robert Baratheon has just died.

It leaves the Lannisters fighting to take over his Iron Throne. War rages on, with the king’s brother, Stannis Baratheon, rallying his troops for a final act. Meanwhile, the North’s frozen lands lick their wounds from the betrayal of the Red Wedding. The powers that be are at each other’s throats while their citizens suffer the consequences. From blacksmiths to farmers and beggars, the kingdoms are in turmoil even as the Great Houses of Westeros continue to bicker and scheme.

Story

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad - Everything We Know

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad will be a blockbuster story-driven action-adventure game. It’ll immerse you in the world of Westeros, traversing the seven kingdoms. As much as it’ll be a mobile game, the game promises vastness and scale, featuring iconic locations from Castle Black to King’s Landing. The stories will be brand-new.

However, the characters will be familiar; some, the official website hints, will be faces from the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series. On the combat front, it’ll be dynamic and manually skill-driven. It seems the agenda will be redeeming your house’s legacy. You can presumably choose paths, too, whether forging alliances or dealing with unexpected betrayals. Your journey through the Kingroad realms will be wholesome and packed with as much danger as intrigue.

Also, the game’s dev blog post adds that the original storyline will be an extension of the TV show. So, fans should feel at home crafting their own path amid the war between the noble houses and the White Walkers beyond the Wall. The official website reveals that Game of Thrones: Kingsroad will have three classes.

These will be unique based on their distinct skills and abilities. Also, they will draw inspiration from the TV show, allowing you to draw connections to the Game of Thrones universe. There will be a Knight, Mercenary, and Assault class. The Knight class’ go-to weapon is the sword. They fight using a longsword, utilizing precision and calculated swordplay.

Mercenaries draw inspiration from the wild and brutal Dothraki. They are destructive and use two-handed axes to dismantle enemies. Assassins, on the other hand, are quick and agile. They also use precision, except swift and mysterious. They wield two daggers, employing delicate skill and a dance-like fighting style.

Netmarble and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment are collaborating on Game of Thrones: Kingsroad. The upcoming game first broke out of its shell at The Game Awards. According to a dev blog post, the game will be bringing the Game of Thrones universe to life “in a way never before experienced.”

Netmarble has obtained official licensing from HBO and Warner Bros. That way, they can faithfully recreate the beloved Westeros.

Trailer

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad World Premiere Trailer from The Game Awards 2024

Yes, a trailer has been released for Game of Thrones: Kingsroad. It pulls back the curtain on the open-world setting you’ll be exploring, as well as the gameplay and some of the characters you’ll be interacting with. Quite honestly, though, the graphics and gameplay look a little sketchy. I mean, it’s a mobile game. So, that may have factored into the extra polish the game needs. The world simply doesn’t feel immersive enough, while the combat lacks the punch it needs.

Still, the game is in development. A lot could change between now and the launch. So, let’s hope that Netmarble refines the graphics and gameplay some more. Perhaps they can also consider a console release, even if the launch is pushed further on. An excellent Game of Thrones RPG is missing in gaming with a truly original storyline. It may be a few years too late, but the demand to head back to Westeros is definitely still present.
