Clockwork Revolution: Everything We Know

Clockwork Revolution character smiling

I can’t remember when I last watched a trailer that was five and a half minutes long. That’s the amount of screentime Clockwork Revolution is willing to give you to show you just how confident they are in the final product. And what’s more? They execute the new trailer in some of the most creative ways possible. Even the character customization is somehow integrated in-game, creatively and humorously taking in your description of a burglar who has just nicked an elite guy.

It’s already clear Clockwork Revolution is going to be one of the most unforgettable gaming experiences –if everything goes as planned. And with the release date currently unknown, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to round up everything we know so far about Clockwork Revolution below.

What is Clockwork Revolution?

Clockwork Revolution is an upcoming first-person role-playing game. It’ll take place in a futuristic steampunk world called Avalon, steeped in a late 1800s Victorian-style aesthetic. Here, the world is divided into two: the upper class, Midward, and the lower class, Tangle. This isn’t just how things are. Instead, they’ve been carefully curated by Lady Ironwood, manipulating time over the years to favor the status quo.

Upon stumbling on Lady Ironwood’s secret, you embark on distorting her power and control over Avalon through obtaining a time-bending device of your own. But with great power comes great responsibility, one you can choose to honor or squander –it’s all up to you. Indeed, Clockwork Revolution intends to provide one of the most extensive player agencies. You not only choose your character appearance and interactions, your dialogue choices affecting your moral ground, but also influence the people and world itself.

By traveling back in time, you can change the past and then return to the present to see how your decisions have affected the people and world around you. This is an RPG that doesn’t just give you the freedom to spearhead your own journey. Rather, actually explore a world that reacts to you and your choices. It’s certainly a clever and unique concept, one we cannot wait to see unfold.

Story

Set in the steampunk Avalon world, your protagonist, Morgan Vanette, is a low-life member of the Rotten Row Hooligans gang. After discovering that Lady Ironwood, a powerful elite, has been manipulating time to enact influence and power, along with the status quo, you embark on a mission to derail her plans and stop her. But your mission leads you down more complicated paths, running into quirky and enigmatic characters. You’ll run into the trailer-referenced, foul-mouthed, Duke Pomphrey, automaton doll.

In fact, the automatons in this world are in plenty, ranging from the everyday use utility models to more advanced machines called Miracle Marvels. But there are scoundrels, too, and potentially violent characters, who, depending on your interactions with them, could cause chaos. You’ll also have a flying automaton companion called Prentice, although its impact on gameplay remains unclear.

Perhaps the most stand-out feature, one that the developing team claims to have cost them an arm and a leg to implement, is the character customization feature. It’s not just a simple UI selection of personalities and traits. Rather, a fully built machine, built into the game’s world itself. And from the trailer, it seems to work much like when you give a description at the police station, assigning points to your stats, and the machine proceeds to make adjustments to your character for you. And the uniqueness of your character bleeds further into your dialogue and social skills.

Gameplay

Clockwork Revolution Gameplay: Everything We Know

So far, we know Clockwork Revolution will be a role-playing game, one where you create your own character and navigate the world, interacting and making vital decisions as you see fit. However, you’ll also engage in first-person combat, wielding a diverse range of weapons. The weapons are a pretty cool bunch, donning the steampunk vibes, and ranging from old-fashioned to high-tech guns and grenades.

Perhaps the most exciting, though, is the time-traveling device. It appears to do far more than simply travel to the past and future. You can slow down time as well, potentially slowing down enemies or even their bullets flying toward you. You can reverse time, too, restoring a blown cover or retrieving bullets from an enemy’s body. Further, you can use time travel to interact with environmental objects to solve puzzles and even evade hazards along the way. The developers tease lots of intertwined systems, including special gadgets, stats, and even Prentice, as part of your RPG systems and skill trees.

Development

Clockwork Revolution: Everything We Know

inXile Entertainment, in partnership with Xbox Game Studios, will be bringing us Clockwork Revolution. The former is pretty well known, having a talented team of veterans who have previously worked on games like Wasteland, Fallout, Magic Obscura, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, and Arcanum: Of Steamworks. Arcanum is the closest in theme to the upcoming game. However, since it launched in 2001, it’ll be quite interesting to see how inXile evolves the steampunk theme.

Trailer

Clockwork Revolution | Xbox Games Showcase 2025

A lot of trailers miss the mark on truly capturing your attention. But Clockwork Revolution’s trailer has been both thorough and enticing. We have two so far. The first showcases the upper-class Midward side of Avalon. Meanwhile, the second goes deeper into the grittier lower-class Tangle side of the world. There’s quite a lot of depth here. And the developers aren’t afraid to push the envelope on conflict and dark humor.
