10 Best Video Game Romances (year)

Romance in gaming has become more complex than you’d think. Sometime ago, merely gifting your romantic interests would build a stronger bond between you two. Or rescuing them from a terrifying monster. Now, you have options to choose from, depending on where you fall on the spectrum. You can romance a wide variety of people from all walks of life. You can settle down with them and build a family. And even go on adventures together or stick around your home, growing crops and all.

All of this is held strong by deeply evocative conversations and storytelling. Dialogue no longer scratches the surface of flirtation and compliments. Now, you can dive in deep with a character, learning their personalities, wants, and needs. You grow closer to them by learning what makes them tick, and then commit yourself to making them happy. And yes, of course, breakups and mistakes do happen in video games as well. With so much breadth and variety, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to narrow down for you the best video game romances this year.

10. It Takes Two

The First 28 Minutes of It Takes Two

It Takes Two is probably my best video game romance, taking you through the ups and downs of a married couple, Cody and May. They get stuck as dolls, navigating challenging platforms that require them to work together to escape. And through the shared experiences, they rediscover their love for each other, fixing their marriage.

Even on the verge of divorce, It Takes Two takes you through a rollercoaster journey of hope. They do get the help of Dr. Hakim, who helps them reconnect and save their marriage.

9. Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Other games like Fire Emblem: Three Houses give you the freedom to talk to and bond with your favorite suitors. You control the main character, and pair them up with another companion, building a close relationship.

You’ll have to work on your bond throughout the game, gifting your romantic interests, retrieving their lost items, or simply talking to them. While the dialogue scenes aren’t always profound, they can be pretty fun and engaging. And in the end, you arrive at a “marriage” or “committed relationship” ending.

8. Life is Strange

Not often do we have the chance to go back in time and correct our mistakes. But Life is Strange gives you the opportunity to do so with its time manipulation ability. While not every entry in the series has been of the same quality, you do get romance options across them all. The first game follows Max’s relationship with Chloe or Warren. Alex in True Colors can romance Steph or Ryan, thus giving you same sex or straight romance avenues.

It’s pretty cute, especially in the first game, with Chloe, starting as best friends who become lovers. And in the main story, you can rewind time to save Chloe multiple times, and make the hard choice between her and your home in the ending.

7. Story of Seasons

Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar - Official Trailer | Nintendo Direct 2025

Story of Seasons is another must-play at the top of the best video game romances this year. The remakes offer the most up-to-date graphics and gameplay. Overall, you’ll have a stream of bachelors and bachelorettes you can romance. New characters are often added across the series, adding to the wealth of diverse personalities you can interact with.

From martial artists to shrine maidens and traveling merchants, romance options vary widely. And you get to choose whoever you prefer, first building a friendship with them through gift giving, unlocking special events tied to them, then proposing and starting a family.

6. Dragon Age

Do explore Dragon Age as well, with its party-based romance options. Whoever you feel most attracted to at your party can become your new partner, gifting them, complementing them, and taking quests together. And in turn, you’ll unlock a deeper relationship that comes with new story arcs and companion abilities.

5. The Last of Us Part II

The Last of Us Part II - Official Story Trailer | PS4

Beyond The Last of Us Part II’s post-apocalyptic story being completely gut-wrenching, there’s hope to be found in love. In the chaos of the zombie-like infected and all, you explore the intimate bond between Ellie and Dina, critical to the main story. Starting as friends, things pick up pace, developing a beautiful connection between them, and happiness, even at such desperate times.

4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

For the handsome fella Geralt of Rivia is, it’s a relief he gets to indulge in pleasure and love when he’s not taking down monsters. And The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt implements it a little too spicy. Ranking highly on the best video game romances, you pursue sorceresses Yennefer or Tris. Yet, Geralt likes to play, so he can pursue other minor relationships, too, with Keira or Shani, at paid brothels.

3. Assassin’s Creed

Even in the ancient civilizations of the Assassin’s Creed, the hooded warriors against the Templars still favored romantic pursuits. Like The Witcher, romance comes with the freedom of choice, whether you’re seeking a short fling or something more long-term. It depends on the dialogue choices you make across Odyssey, Valhalla, and Shadows.

2. Stardew Valley

But none other comes to the full-blown life you could have with your partner like in Stardew Valley. Transported to a cozy, little village, you begin pursuing romantic interests with the townsfolk. Gifting them returns to forge strong bonds, but also completing any quests for them.

As your friendship grows, so does the possibility of marriage. Here’s where you bring out your courting toolsets, giving them flowers and a mermaid’s pendant to propose. And then the beauty of a home and family comes along.

1. Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 Official Launch Trailer

As for Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s party-based. So, the more you travel and fight beside your companions, the more you feel drawn to some of them. And you can explore these bonds further by making dialogue choices that lead to deeper connections. You can complete quests for them and wind up building a long-term relationship.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is pretty cool because you can romance several characters before settling down on the one you like most. Or you can pursue a polyamorous relationship with characters like the Drow Twins, Shadowheart, and Halsin if you like.
