5. Mass Effect Trilogy (2007 – 2012)

Trilogies You'll Love if You Enjoyed Shadowrun

Mass Effect and Shadowrun share a lot of similarities. Aside from being excellent action RPGs, they are both set in a distant future dominated by high-tech and alien creatures. Mass Effect is set entirely in the galaxy. As Commander Shepard, you must lead a squad team against an imminent threat to the galaxy. The fate of civilization is in your hands, which is a compelling incentive to reach for the stars. Of course, there are humans and aliens in the game, as well as plenty of drama and a compelling narrative that draws you into rallying themes of hope, violence, and romance.

What makes Mass Effect so great is that it stays true to a near-perfect video game trilogy. Each game reveals endearing characters and memorable moments that keep you hooked throughout the entire series. It feels like a journey to save the galaxy, with both personal and logical story arcs that give meaning to the series. BioWare recently released the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, a remastered version of the Mass Effect trilogy with advanced gameplay that meets modern standards. So, if you're concerned about Mass Effect aging, you can opt for the remastered version for a much smoother gaming experience of the trilogy.

4. Halo (2001 – 2007)

Alternatively, you could look into Halo, a military high-tech RPG set in the distant future. The world has devolved into chaos, and you are once again needed to save humanity from alien species seeking to take over. As far as first-person shooter games go, Halo has long held a special place among the most impressive first-person shooter games in history dating back to the early 2000's.

Each subsequent game improved on its predecessor, which is significant given that Halo has one of the most expansive sci-fi universes and fantastic gameplay elements. It's no surprise that Halo 3 still has a devoted fan base. But if you want to play a more robust Halo game with advanced gameplay, the remastered versions are available. We’ll warn you, though, that the story arc in the originals is a dashing spice of nostalgia and unexpected twists that remain unrivaled across all other subsequent Halo releases.

3. Star Wars: Dark Forces Collector’s Trilogy (1995 – 2015)

The visual aesthetic of Shadowrun is, arguably, its most notable feature. When cyberpunk meets magic, the result of which is a one-of-a-kind visual. From chrome implants to electric ports in the brain, Shadowrun presents nothing short of outstanding high-tech features. Add sci-fi fantasy to the mix, and you've got yourself a work of art.

In a similar vein, Star Wars: Dark Forces transports you to a fantasy world inhabited by Jedis, the Force, and lightsabers. If you haven't played it already, the Star Wars: Dark Forces trilogy is an excellent place to begin your exploration of the Star Wars universe. Given its age, gameplay elements are out of date by modern standards. The plot, on the other hand, is timeless.

Exploring the lives of Star Wars legends feels personable and like a front-row seat to the impactful moments of their origins. The story arc is riddled with revenge and honor themes. Star Wars: Dark Forces received critical acclaim at the time of its release for pushing the boundaries of storytelling, gameplay, and game design. As a result, subsequent games have done well to improve on their predecessors, all the while, providing a timeless rendition to the action-adventure genre.

2. The Witcher (2007 – 2015)

Shadowrunners take what seems like a lifetime to plan daring heists against the dystopian megacorps controlling pretty much everything in the Shadowrun universe. You’re guns for hire, taking huge risks and sometimes getting ripped off with nothing to do but cause havoc. Your skills are your best defense, so, ultimately, each win feels well-earned.

The Witcher is similar in that players take on the role of Geralt of Rivia, a loner who sets out to hunt the most daring monsters. Because of his genetically enhanced abilities, he has an edge above all else. In this game, you’re your own boss, navigating an enthralling fantasy world full of mysteries and never-ending adventures.

While The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received more attention upon its release, players developed an endearing affection for its previous titles after discovering that they too were excellent in their own right. There are also numerous mods, enhancements, and updates that improve the aged gameplay. Though you’d still have a fun time playing the original titles.

1. BioShock (2007 – 2013)

At the top of the five video game trilogies you’ll love if you enjoyed Shadowrun is BioShock. Besides the fantastical, dystopian world that demands constant engagement throughout the game, its narrative is perhaps the most compelling reason you should check it out. BioShock‘s themes cast a wide net, from social to moral issues, and each moment feels like a test of the world order. The gameplay is also not far off. Combining tactful and stealth combat is essential. Every corner in Rapture reeks of the opportunity to change the story line in your favor.

A great aspect of the game is its replayability. It never gets boring, unless you've spent more than enough time playing the survival-horror and futuristic, steampunk gameplay. Regardless, the game is quite unique, offering an authentic atmospheric design coupled with fast-paced gameplay. It, further, extends into retro-futuristic nationalism, tackling some pretty intense philosophical issues that are well worth your time.
