WARLOCK: Dungeons & Dragons — Everything We Know
D&D will stand the test of time, especially its classic classes like sorcerers, rogues, druids, rangers, clerics, and warlocks. Yes, that’s the name of the new D&D game by Invoke Studios and Wizards of the Coast. And I can’t help but wonder if this is only the beginning of a long-running franchise with all of the renowned D&D classes having their own titles. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and judge the upcoming game by merit. Not that the devs have revealed much about the game. We do have some solid facts, though. So, let’s quickly run them down in our WARLOCK: Dungeons & Dragons — Everything We Know article below.
What is WARLOCK: Dungeons & Dragons?

WARLOCK: Dungeons & Dragons is an upcoming third-person, action-adventure game that takes place in a dark fantasy world that draws inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons. Interestingly, this is the debut game for Invoke Studios. So, naturally, that comes with some caution over the final product, especially with the devs holding out on revealing the in-game gameplay footage.
All we have is the cinematic trailer, which features the titular Warlock: a female, who by D&D’s rulesets, is a character who wields magic and casts spells. Warlocks are different from wizards, who study magic, and Sorcerers, whose magic is innate. Instead, Warlocks gain magical abilities from others, say a pact with mysterious beings and otherworldly entities. Overall, they are an exciting class, with deep customization, and unique, though limited, spells that include attacks and heals.
Story

In WARLOCK: Dungeons & Dragons’ story, you’re welcomed to a world of forbidden magic. Starring Kaatr, voiced by award-winning Tricia Helfer, you’ll explore a dark fantasy D&D world. While your original role will be a veteran warrior, you’ll make a pact to gain forbidden magical abilities. And these open up exploration quests, alongside plenty of new challenges.
Your spells will be the key to discovering the mysteries of the game’s alluring but dangerous world. You’ll fight enemies using both magic and melee damage, utilizing a fighting style that is both brutal and strategic.
Gameplay

I can’t speak for WARLOCK: Dungeons & Dragons’ gameplay just yet, without gameplay footage. All we know is the description of the game as an action-adventure. You’ll engage in combat, exploration, and a story-driven narrative. It’ll also be a single-player game, set in the world of D&D.
The President of Wizards of the Coast expressed in a press release how Warlocks’ wielding of magic often comes at a hefty price. It should be interesting to see how the consequences for your choices are portrayed in the character’s story and journey, if at all.
Meanwhile, Hight assures players of a compelling world, crafted with the “dangerous wonder” of D&D in mind. Here, you’ll learn and master Kaatri’s new magical abilities, pushing her skills to the limits, while discovering the secrets and mysteries that lie hidden in your journey’s path.
Development

WARLOCK: Dungeons & Dragons’ developer is called Invoke Studios. And if the name sounds unfamiliar, it’s because this is going to be their first game ever. However, the developers at Invoke have worked on some pretty heavy hits before, like Deus Ex, Far Cry, and Watch Dogs.
Meanwhile, the publisher, Wizards of the Coast, a division of Hasbro, is more well-known for publishing tabletops, like D&D and Magic: The Gathering. With their experience in tabletops and fantasy RPGs, they should have the upcoming game’s future on lock.
You also may know the lead starring actress, Tricia Helfer, from Lucifer and Battlestar Galactica. And the trailer features TOOL’s “Forty Six & 2”. So, likely a strong cast and music set for the upcoming game.
In the game’s press release, General Manager at Invoke, Dominic Guay, says, “Working with our colleagues at Wizards of the Coast on a brand as rich as D&D has given the team the creative freedom and support to build a new, ambitious open-world experience for players. We’re excited to finally announce WARLOCK and look forward to sharing gameplay details in the future.” So, definitely keep an eye out for future updates.
Trailer
WARLOCK: Dungeons & Dragons’ premiere trailer, launched at The Game Awards 2025, is pure cinema. The Warlock female protagonist looks the part and wields a sword, suggesting swordplay. “Suggesting” because actual gameplay footage isn’t shown in the trailer. Still, the lore seems rich with dark fantasy. And the music is a banger from the TOOL music band.
Bits of the story are revealed in the trailer. The hint about forbidden magic coming at a cost. But also a dark fantasy world of blue and purple hues. And clouds of smoke sweeping over ruins and ominous castle halls. There’s plenty you can nitpick from the trailer, given it’s the only marketing material we have of the game so far. That the music could have a hidden meaning: “the shadow” could represent Kaatri’s psyche.
There are also teeny-weeny D&D references to the Raven Queen and the Hexblade Patron. And others are less subtle, like the swirling feathers. You then fight undead vampiric knights and skeleton warriors. And in these, you catch glimpses of Kaatri’s magical abilities, summoning tentacles that warp around the skeletons, along with a spell attack that destroys the skeletons, crashing them to dust. Peep the monster at the end of the trailer, as well, the Beholder or, more specifically, the Deathkiss, perhaps, with a foreboding red eye.
Evidently, WARLOCK: Dungeons & Dragons has some direct representations of lore and creatures from the D&D universe. But will it have new ideas of its own?
Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

WARLOCK: Dungeons & Dragons is planned to be released sometime in 2027. So, still aways to go before launch. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms. And the details for the editions are still unknown.
