Until Dawn Movie Won’t Be a Traditional Adaptation

It’s certainly a huge year for PlayStation Studios, and more importantly, exclusive IP like Horizon Zero Dawn and Until Dawn, both of which are currently in line to receive movie adaptations for the big screen. There is some troubling news that orbits the latter, however—news that ought to cause something of a stir for both die-hard fans of Supermassive Games’ acclaimed choice-based standalone horror and avid moviegoers alike. As it turns out, the upcoming movie adaptation of 2015’s Until Dawn won’t be using the source material to produce its script or the intricate traps and pathways as shown in its video game counterpart. To put it simply, Until Dawn (the movie, the is), won’t be a word-for-word replica, but rather, a spiritual successor of a similar concept. That’s something.
Given the fact that neither Supermassive Games nor the movie’s publisher have lifted the veil on any major scenes, characters, or video game Easter Eggs, there is a lot of speculation about whether or not the film will be utilizing any of the source material whatsoever. Apparently, though, the actor who portrayed Dr. Hill in the video game, Peter Stormare, is going to be making a reprisal for the upcoming motion picture. That leaves the likes of Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere—two voice actors who have yet to confirm their involvement in the adaptation, if at all. Either way, it appears that the upcoming movie won’t be a traditional adaptation, so it’s probably best to dash those hopes of seeing the original cast in their respective roles. Sad times.
As it stands, the Until Dawn movie is due to arrive at some stage in April 2025. For more information on Supermassive Games’ forthcoming release, be sure to check in with the team over on their official social handle here.
