Tormented Souls 2: Everything We Know

Remember Tormented Souls, that survival horror game that went on to score near-perfect scores all across the board for its atmospheric world and casting choices? Well, as it turns out, there’s a sequel knocking about, and it’ll be heading over to consoles and PC at some point in 2024. So, if you thought the world of classic horror and questionably bad outfits had itched its last scratch — then think again; Tormented Souls 2 is en route.

It isn’t out for a little while yet, so you’ve got plenty of time to brush up on the deets and make a decision whether or not to add it to your wishlist. Until then, here’s everything we’ve been able to scrape together on the matter, including its plot line, characters, gameplay, and potential release date. Care to hear more? Here’s everything you need to know about Tormented Souls 2.

What Is Tormented Souls 2?

To put you in the picture, Tormented Souls 2 is an upcoming survival horror game by Dual Effect, as well as the direct sequel to 2021’s—you guessed it—Tormented Souls. In the forthcoming adventure, players will be invited to once again pick up with Caroline Walker in the aftermath of the nightmarish Wildberger Hospital episode. With the mystery surrounding the twins finally over, Caroline will look to embrace a new life and turn over a new leaf, unaware that an underlying horror brews from the underbelly of her recent memories. Before long, the supernatural world will take her back in, and thus initiate yet another endearing journey through the darkest shadows of Puerto Miller.

“Caroline Walker is back in the sequel to the award-winning survival horror classic. In the wake of the Wildberger Hospital incident, Caroline yearns for a normal life. However, fate has other plans and Caroline’s sister Anna falls victim to a mysterious affliction. Conventional remedies prove futile as Anna slips in and out of consciousness, only waking to cough up inky globs of blood. With nowhere else to turn, Caroline looks to the supernatural and an ancient, forbidden ritual…”

Like the first game in the series, Tormented Souls 2 will look to capture the essence of classic survival horror, and will ultimately use the likes of Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and Alone in the Dark as first ports of call for inspiration. So, expect plenty of fixed-camera angles, shoddy voiceover work, and blood-pumping jump scares, basically. As it happens, developer Crystal Cove never quite moved on from the 90s — and still hasn’t, by the looks of it.

Story

As a quick reminder, Tormented Souls 2 will serve as a direct sequel to 2021’s Tormented Souls, so while you won’t have to be acquainted with the first game to understand the second, it will definitely help. And while it won’t feature the Wildberger Hospital—the primary location from the original game—it will feature Caroline Walker, the series’ protagonist.

“After the events of Wildberger Hospital, Caroline yearns for a normal life with her younger sister, Anna. However, fate has other plans,” the blurb reads in part. “As Anna falls victim to a mysterious affliction, coughing blood and experiencing blackened eyes and moments of unconsciousness, conventional remedies prove futile. In a desperate bid to save her sister, Caroline must turn to the supernatural.”

“Welcome to Puerto Miller, a remote Southern American town with a chilling past. Founded ages ago by the reclusive Ismuit tribe—a small religious group that shunned the outside world—the town conceals unspeakable horrors beneath its ancient exterior.” Creepy.

Gameplay

If you romped through the original Tormented Souls chapter, then you’ll know that the series itself is a love letter to the world of iconic survival horror franchises, including but not limited to Resident Evil and Silent Hill. That core DNA is to remain in the sequel, so you can expect an equal amount of combat, puzzle solving, and homegrown jump scares — if not more.

According to Crystal Cove, Tormented Souls 2 will let players “face pulse-pounding combat as you confront monstrous creatures using a range of ingenious makeshift weapons. Every corner may hide an enemy, so resource management is key to survival.” In addition, the sequel will also let you “utilize logic and reasoning to forge connections between items found in the environment and the intricately designed puzzles. Creatively combine resources to unlock twisted enigmas and delve deeper into the dark mysteries that shroud your path.”

Development

It was always in the cards, a sequel to the award-winning Tormented Souls. That said, it wasn’t something we expect to see come to light as early as 2024. Needless to say that fans are beyond stoked to see Caroline Walker back at the helm for another romp through the nightmarish world of all things supernatural.

Like the first game, the sequel will be headed up by Crystal Cove, a studio best known for, well, Tormented Souls. According to the team, the game will be targeting a rough 2024 launch across all major platforms. You can check out the studio’s dev log over on its publishing website here.
