Scott Pilgrim EX: Everything We Know

If you’re like me, you must be pretty excited to see Scott Pilgrim return to its rightful place in gaming. It’s been over ten years since Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. At least, Anamanaguchi is returning to our ears with their hyperactive electronic sounds: always the best accompaniment to beating people up on the street. Anyway, what do we know so far about the new game? Read our Scott Pilgrim EX: Everything We Know article below to find out.

What is Scott Pilgrim EX?

Scott Pilgrim EX: Everything We Know

Scott Pilgrim EX is an upcoming side-scrolling, beat ‘em up game. Just like its predecessor, it plans to follow the same gameplay style, much to the pleasure of fans who’ve been left high and dry for over ten years now. While Ubisoft spearheaded the development and publishing of the previous game, though, it seems Tribute Games will be taking charge here. And from the trailer, all seems up to par, bringing back the same charm Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game stole our hearts in 2010.

So, what’s this new game exactly? Well, it’s an adaptation of the famed Scott Pilgrim graphic novels and film. As such, you’ll be controlling titular Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers, who embark on a brand-new adventure across time and space, but, as always, rooted in a reimagined Toronto.

Story

As mentioned, your protagonists are Scott and Ramona. However, you’ll also unlock more playable characters from the source material. The game will take place in an unknown future time period in Toronto, where three rival gangs have unleashed chaos on the streets. You have the Vegans, the Robots, and the Demons, wreaking havoc on your home. And it’s up to you to put a stop to all the madness.

Still, at the top of the food chain is your biggest enemy yet; the person who’s behind all the gang rage. According to Steam, your mission will trigger when Scott Pilgrim’s bandmates are taken by shadowy forces. And then, the brand-new adventure kicks in. As much as you’ll run into old faces, there’ll be new characters, too. And the world will be surprisingly interconnected, with levels that tuck away hidden areas and special quests.

Gameplay

Let’s set the record straight with a few quick facts on the gameplay. First, Scott Pilgrim EX will tell a brand-new story and adventure, taking place in the streets of Toronto. It’ll feature a four-player co-op mode where you can party with friends, with the option for online or split-screen co-op. You can stick to the single-player option, as well. However, if there’s anything to learn from Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game, it’s that the game is so much more fun with friends.

A quick taste of the combat, you’ll be throwing punches at enemies, following your gut instinct, but also improvising and strategizing your next move. It’s a brawling venture, so any combos you can string together are welcome, as well as wacky weapons and special attacks you can use on enemies. As for your characters, they have a ways to go to build their stats and unlock special bonuses. And with seven playable characters with different combat styles, you’ll surely have a blast.

Additionally, you’ll enjoy the familiar retro visuals from the previous game, quite unique in the sea and clutter of sidescrolling beat ‘em-ups out there. The visuals look cartoony, oozing charm and delight. It’s like even though you’re maliciously beating people up on the street, you’re still in the warm embrace of innocence and vibrance, resulting in an overall fun adventure.

Development

Tribute Games is all hands on deck on the development and publishing of Scott Pilgrim EX. However, they do collaborate with Scott Pilgrim’s creator, Bryan Lee O’Malley, to deliver the most authentic beat ‘em-up fans will appreciate. In fact, O’Malley is the story writer, sure to craft an adventure that pleases both old and new fans alike.

But it’s Anamanaguchi’s music score that has grabbed the attention of fans the most. The pop band will be composing all-new music for the new game, incorporating 8-bit energy and hyper-melodic tracks into the gameplay.

Scott Pilgrim EX seems to be following a lot of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game’s tried-and-tested concepts. And if the shoes are to fit the footsteps that came before, we should be looking at an upbeat and energetic time, filled with catchy tunes. The presentation already looks promising, and the combat just as so.

You can always take a refresher course from the 2023 Complete Edition of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game. This version brings back the original’s 2D arcade gaming style in true fashion. While Ubisoft still spearheads the development and publishing of the remaster, I anticipate the upcoming entry will be similarly an explosive time, one I so cannot wait to venture into real soon.

Scott Pilgrim EX - Coming in 2026 🌀🛹

Scott Pilgrim EX’s first trailer is out now. From the trailer, the gameplay appears to be as chaotic as ever, and donning an exciting retro brawling adventure. You can check out the co-op beat ‘em up action you’ll be engaging in with a friend in tow, as a flurry of enemies flood the streets of Toronto. Hopefully, the controls and functionalities make it as easy as possible to enjoy a smooth and seamless playthrough. The ease of dropping in and out of a co-op session should definitely go a long way to ensuring an uninterrupted flow of mayhem.
