Netflix Has Acquired Its First Game Developer

Netflix

Netflix has managed to acquire its first official game developer, Night School Studio, a team you may be familiar with through the likes of Oxenfree and Afterparty.

Talks have been floating about for the past few months surrounding Netflix’s growing interest in the gaming industry. Of course, having already planted roots with Minecraft: Story Mode and other works, it was only a matter of time before the next leg of the journey was put forward. And now, the streaming giant appears to be taking it, solidifying the relationship with the Oxenfree developer, Night School Studio.

“Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a natural pairing. It felt like both teams came to this conclusion instinctively,” Night School commented on the acquisition. “It’s a surreal honor to be the first games studio to join Netflix. The Netflix team has shown the utmost care for protecting our studio culture and creative vision.”

Night School Studio has joined the Netflix family. So, what comes next?

What does this mean for Netflix subscribers?

With the acquisition now in place, chances are the upcoming Oxenfree II: Lost Signals game will launch on the Netflix library alongside the PS4, PS5, Switch and PC platforms. Of course, this remains to be seen, though it does seem like the most likely course of action for both parties. And who knows — perhaps Netflix will aim to transfer Night School’s other projects once the cooling-off period parts ways? Just a thought, anyway.

“We’ll continue working with developers around the world and hiring the best talent in the industry to deliver a great collection of exclusive games designed for every kind of gamer and any level of play,” Netflix’s Mike Verdu said as part of the announcement. “Like our shows and films, these games will all be included as part of your Netflix membership — all with no ads and no in-app purchases. Stay tuned for more.”

Bring it on, Night School

So, there you have it. The Netflix family are ramping up their efforts to wedge a foot in the gaming industry — and we’re all for it. Whether or not the newly-established connection with the Oxenfree developer will churn out promising works or not is another story. Either way, we’re excited to see what idles behind the curtain for 2022. Let’s just hope the streaming giant can crack the formula and deliver some top-notch material.

You’ll be able to access Netflix Gaming as part of the standard subscription. So, that means no hidden fees or, dare I say — microtransactions. You can follow the updates over on the official social handle here. Or if you’re leaning more towards Night School Studio — you can follow the news for Oxenfree II: Lost Signals here.
