Morkull Ragast’s Rage: Everything We Know

Hell hath no fury like a skull headed Morkull scorned, except Morkull is you, and he needs your help to break the fourth wall. Morkull Ragast’s Rage is a sidescrolling action-adventure game whose greatest charm is its unique 2D graphics that are bloody and packed with scatological humor. It takes you through Morkull’s escape plan from Ragast and his zealous ambition to execute his villainous plans. Are you curious to know more about developer Disaster Games’ newest game in town? Tag along on our Morkull Ragast’s Rage: Everything We Know article to find out.
What is Morkull Ragast’s Rage?

Morkull Ragast’s Rage is an upcoming Hollow Knight-like sidescrolling action adventure game currently in development by Disaster Games. Players will break the fourth wall, the invisible wall that allows the audience to see the actors. However, the actors cannot (or act as if they cannot) see the audience. It’s an interesting take where Morkull, the main character, knows that you (the player) are controlling his actions and that Disaster Games (the developer) created him. So, how exactly does the story go?
Story

Morkull Ragast’s Rage kicks off with Morkull trapped in the Ragast. Ragast is Morkull’s prison of sorts. He has to break free to live up to his name as the God of Death and Darkness. You know, the villainous way of life to unleash carefully curated diabolical plans on the world. Take a look at the official Steam description:
You will control Morkull, the villain of the story, who knows that he is a character in a video game, the existence of a player who controls him (that is, you) and of some developers who have created him (that is, us).
Your objective? Help Morkull escape from the Ragast so he can rule and carry out his evil plans around the world.
Anyway, typical cliché villain…
In-game, Morkull can communicate with you through texts like “fight like a God” or longer get-to-know-Morkull phrases like, “I’m not particularly a fan of team sports, you know” and “Well, I’m sure you like me, obviously.” It sounds like a fun way to curate an interactive experience and feel more in Morkull’s shoes.
Plus, the guy has a cool personality and great charisma. On Steam, it says that Morkull will constantly use humor, bad jokes, and pop culture references to light up the mood. So, I bet there’ll hardly be winks of boredom creeping in.
It’s unclear what happens once Morkull escapes from the clutches of Ragast. What influence will the player and developer have on Morkull’s journey? Or whether there’s an actual story here besides hatching an escape plan through action, platforming, and exploration? Hopefully, more concrete details will come soon.
Gameplay

The gameplay will infuse platforming, action, and light exploration together. It’ll have a 2D graphics display, so there will be more horizontal and vertical traversal mechanics to move across levels. Morkull will also have the power of the God of Death and Darkness, allowing him to perform flashy attacks and combos against enemies. Players will be able to string several combos together in a row. The goal, should you choose to accept it, is to fight your way through the deepest, most remote corners of Ragast and make your glorious escape.
Graphics-wise, Morkull Ragast’s Rage uses a completely hand-drawn and animated frame-by-frame visual. It’s perfectly alluded to on Steam, with snippets of the process from sketching to inking to animating. The graphics draw inspiration from animations and other 2D games, specifically traditional ones that infuse natural beauty and life.
The “light exploration” part’s details are a bit scarce for now. Being a 2D game, it can be restrictive to wander around Ragast freely. Perhaps, too, Morkull’s fourth wall break will come in handy here to guide players in the right direction whenever they stray too far from the goal. It better be present or something cooler because breaking the fourth wall seems to be the main captivating factor for the new game.
Development

Developer Disaster Games and Publisher Selecta Play are currently working on Morkull Ragast’s Rage. They have constantly let fans know of new updates on their official Twitter page here, where they announced the September 8–10 Morkull Ragast’s Rage demo at Indie Dev Day. Hopefully, more concrete details on the gameplay and story will keep coming to keep us busy until the tentatively set release date of 2024.
Trailer
You can watch the Morkull Ragast’s Rage official announcement trailer here. At first sight, it looks like a Hollow Knight game; however, Morkull Ragast’s Rage still retains its uniqueness. It’s surprisingly a pretty detailed trailer, with snippets of the platforming and combat against enemies sequences. The soundtrack is a head bopper, playing in the background of its 2D art style, which mostly takes a gloomy, dark color palette with purple undertones.
We also get snippets of the lighthearted text conversations between Morkull and the players. All typical of a villain’s character. Skull-headed Morkull sure does love his quirky one-liners and pop culture references. He is no stranger to vulgar language and bad jokes. And in one scene, he takes a piss on the floor and gives us a thumbs-up.
