Meet Your Maker: Everything We Know

Behaviour Games’ Meet Your Maker comes as part of the studio’s latest batch of innovative triple-A video games to release on modern consoles and PC. What is it, you ask? Well, acknowledging the blurb, it’s a block-based first-person shooter that blends the likes of Minecraft with Borderlands, and then adds a major helping of Vincenzo Natalie’s cult classic flick, Cube, to the mix.
An interesting premise, for sure, and one we’re pretty stoked to see come to fruition ahead of its 2023 release date. What more do you need to know about it, though? Well, here’s everything we’ve managed to scrape together since catching wind of it at The Game Awards. Meet Your Maker: what is it, and is it worth pre-ordering before year’s end?
What Is Meet Your Maker?

Meet Your Maker is a first-person building-and-raiding game that sees players designing, altering, and conquering fully custom-built levels that are made entirely out of blocks. As designers, you must establish impenetrable Outposts and flesh them out with traps, guards, and obstacles for others to try and shovel through and dominate for perks and rewards.
The good news is, Meet Your Maker can either be played alone or with friends in its online multiplayer mode. As a ruler, a grunt, or as a hopeful conquerer, you will devise a plan to either eliminate the opposition through the establishment of innovative mazes, or utilize your intuition to navigate and dismantle the nexus of labyrinths that stands before you and victory.
“Immerse yourself in block-based, first-person level building,” the official blurb reads. “Use a variety of blocks, traps, and guards to construct deadly maze-like Outposts designed to protect your Genmat and rip trespassing players to shreds.”
Story

“You are the Custodian of the Chimera, a living experiment created as a last resort to save life on Earth,” the Steam page reads. “Enter a tactical battle for the planet’s most coveted resource and the key to your Chimera’s evolution: pure Genetic Material. Construct and fortify brutal Outposts to extract and guard your Genmat. Infiltrate and outsmart other players’ Outposts to gather more. Adapt, upgrade, and evolve… or die trying.”
Clearly, then, Meet Your Maker is less about preserving a species, and more about learning how to stand on one’s own two feet and evolve with the help of the planet’s natural resources which, judging by the blurb, are incredibly scarce and the reason for the ever-evolving uproar. How teamwork comes into play is another question. On paper, though, it seems abundantly clear that, when all’s said and done — you stand alone, now, and forever.
Gameplay

From what we’ve caught of Meet Your Maker so far, it seems the game will mostly play into the first-person shooter domain. Coined as a building-and-raiding game with a block-based structure, players can most definitely expect a smooth blend of Minecraft-meets-Borderlands, complete with a rich sci-fi setting and a fully customizable network of fortresses to conquer.
In Meet Your Maker, players must hoard a genetic material which they will use to erect sky-high Outposts and fill them out with custom trap rooms, obstacles courses, and guarded checkpoints. The idea, then, is to build your own fortress while working to invade another; the last one standing claims the match. Simple.
Between building and invading enemy Outposts, players will also have to evolve their characters and make the required upgrades needed to topple the opposition’s defences. It’s a mixture, then, between strategizing, base building, and engaging in immersive close-quarters combat.
Development

Meet Your Maker is being developed by Behaviour Interactive, the same studio that brought Dead by Daylight to the table back in 2016. Alongside this, Behaviour Interactive is also working on Silent Hill: Ascension, another follow-up chapter to the universally acclaimed horror saga.
Meet Your Maker was first brought to light back in August 2022, at which point its developer showcased its initial gameplay footage and overall premise. It’s unclear when Behaviour Interactive actually started work on the multiplayer game, but its relatively quiet agenda in recent years does suggest it has been under the hammer for just shy of four years now, with the studio’s last major release being Deathgarden in 2018. Don’t take our word on that, though.
